Tranexamic Acid causing stomach issues

Unreasonable to think that it can?

GP and NHS online state no common side effects.

But since taking only 2 doses I've had a bit of a stomach ache, loose BMs, reduced appetite and a flare up of indigestion.

I am prone to indigestion but I can usually pin point the case of it.

I've stopped taking the tranexamic acid as its reduced my bleeding after the two doses. I'm now 30 hours since my last dose and my stomach still isn't great but I think getting better..

Anyone else had similar experiences?

They gave me terrible cramps

MyFridgeIsRed · 16/03/2023 13:23

I didn't get stomach issues but had debilitating headaches. I take them some months when I have a lot on to reduce the bleeding, but if I happen to be at home for the first few days of my period I tend to skip them.
I wasn't really warned of any side effects, just told to drink lots of water, and when I spoke to my gp about the headaches she said it's fairly common and then listed off another load of side effects.
I have taken mefinamic acid in the past aswell, they worked amazingly at first, they're a pain relief too so it was lovely. But after about 4 months the effect of reducing bleeding seemed to stop working for me. But if you've not tried it yet they might be worth a go?

I had the headache the first night I took them

Yep - vomiting and upset stomach within a day of taking it, something I never normally suffer from (thankfully!!) stopped taking it immediately and was better within a day or so x

OnNaturesCourse · 16/03/2023 16:20

@Hotmess1 sorry to hear it made you so ill! You'd think you'd be warned. I'm now nearly 2 days since my last dose so I would have assumed it would be out my system. I did take two doses close together though so I wonder if I've just annoyed my sensative stomach.

Yes, always gave me a terribly dodgy stomach anytime I used it so I would avoid as much as I could. I mentioned it at a Gynae visit and they said it was quite common.

Cinders15 · 16/03/2023 16:38

Yup
I had projectile vomiting! And with the blood loss at the other end, I couldn't cope!

OnNaturesCourse · 16/03/2023 17:05

Terrible that no side effects are apparently common!

How long did the stomach issues last for you all?

I can't tolerate it at all. Worst diarrhoea of my life, only way to stop it was to stop the tablets. I'd have ended up on a drip for dehydration otherwise, (I've been put on a drip for severe morning sickness a few times and I was heading towards that level of dehydration).

OnNaturesCourse · 16/03/2023 18:19

That's horrible. Poor you!

Funny you should mention the morning sickness - my stomach felt like this when pregnant too, really swishy and indigestion.

I guess it depends on whether people report issues they have experienced with medications and how common it across the numbers being prescribed it.

OnNaturesCourse · 16/03/2023 19:02

Just with people saying their GP mention it only after they reported it.

I have reported it on the yellow card site too.

Took two omeprazole today and it seems to have atleast helped a little bit.

I had a similar reaction to strong painkillers now I think on it.
