NLW is now what they call minimum wage?

National Living Wage is the new term for the Minimum Wage
They have changed the language to make it seem like we are being given a living wage.
But the Real Living Wage is far higher.
Have I been asleep for a few years? Or just caught out by the subtle change?

Totally prepared to being flamed.
I should have taken more notice.
And it affects me!!

They’ve been saying this fora few years.
The real living wage foundation recommendation is higher than the national living wage.

I think it came in in 2016 to try and pretend people were paying the living wage when they weren't.

@Pouffeycat gov.uk publish NMW and NLW rates and have done for a long time www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates

Your link proves my point!
There is no such thing as the NMW anymore!

@Pouffeycat there is still a NMW, which is paid to people under 23, so the term still exists.

NLW for people over 25, now 23, replaced NMW 7 years ago in 2016, so it’s not a “new term”.

Don't be too hard on yourself, that's exactly what the government wanted, to make everyone think they are actually enforcing a living wage when they aren't. I think there should be something similar to copyright that applies to the government, that if they brand something with a confusing term that they should have to change it. Soon they'll be calling jobs 'national hobbies' and declaring they've allowed us all to stop work 😂

nutellacrepe · 02/10/2023 06:27

I had exactly the same thought, OP.

I thought the Living Wage was set higher than National Minimum Wage, for employers who wanted to actually pay people enough to live on (which minimum wage usually isn't!)

I am living a few years behind though apparently.

Sneaky move from the govt.

The minimum wage is set at varying rates for apprentices, under 18 year olds, 18-20 year olds, and 21-22 year olds.

The National Living Wage is set for 23 and over.

It's just the minimum wage under a different name.
