The neighbours dog

I have previously had issues with the neighbors dog barking a lot. Each time it was let out it yapped and yapped and I could also hear it yapping indoors too. If they went out, it was non-stop.

Eventually after the neighbours had gone on a night shift and the dog had been barking non-stop from when I got home in an evening and until around midnight when one of them got home, I put a nice note through their door and since then, for the past year i'd say, all has been well. They have shut the dog up as soon as it barked and the dog seemed to learn not to bark as much.

However, I have noticed this morning and this evening that the dog has been left to bark at prolonged periods again and my anxiety has shot up. What can I do?

I would monitor for now to see if it's a one off today. If it's not a one off then you can try the note again. If that fails, contact your local council and ask for advice on next steps.

I also suggest you learn to manage your anxiety - I say this as an anxiety sufferer myself. Taking some control over your own comfort will help (ear buds to drown out noise, the usual meditation/breathing exercises etc, and, if particularly bad that it interferes with day-to-day life, see the GP to discuss meds).

Hopefully it is a one off.

TheWhisker · 20/03/2023 18:58

Hello, thanks for your replies. Unfortunately it wasn't a one off. After it's been so quiet after my last note, i'm really pissed off.

It was barking for an hour this morning from 7am and then again for an hour now. Someone is in the house, just upstairs. It's so stressful.

I ended up going round. Both neighbours are in, yet letting their old dog with separation issues yap and howl for hours. People never fail to amaze me. All the dog wants to do is be with one of them. Hopefully they'll try a bit harder to leave me in peace now and to show the dog the attention that it craves.

I'm hate confrontation though and i'm dying inside now but I work so hard, work is stressful and I deserve bloody peace in my own home!

Did you put a note through the door OP or speak to them, and if so what was the response?

TheWhisker · 20/03/2023 19:22

I spoke to them and she was apologetic. The dog is an absolute pain in the arse and if it's left for a few minutes it barks but for them both to be sat upstairs for an hour while it barks is beyond me.

Call your council for advice. I had to download an app, activate it when the dog barked, then press send. Decibels, location and time were automatically recorded. Owner received a notice from the council.

TheWhisker · 20/03/2023 19:24

To be honest, I wouldn't be able to even hear my dog in that kind of distress (kind of a high-pitched bark) for a few minutes, never mind an hour.

She did say that she'd try and stop the dog barking but that the dog was a pain. All I thought, well it's your bloody responsibility.

I dunno how anyone can tolerate listening to their own dog bark for hours on end. Fair enough if they are out and have no idea.

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 20/03/2023 19:30

Imo start a complaint with the council now. They send a diary sheet. They can enforce your ndn to shut the ddog up or have it rehomed... Which would be best for the ddog.

ActDottie · 20/03/2023 19:48

Speak to them about it. Don’t just go to the council straight away if you value your relationship with your neighbours. Go and have a conversation with the neighbour and understand what they’re doing to prevent the barking.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 20/03/2023 19:58

I wouldn't be able to work upstairs with the dog woofing and creating all kinds of noise downstairs. Not without coming down to settle them down. Poor dog and poor neighbours :-(

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 20/03/2023 20:00

'the dog was a pain'

Poor dog :-( it probably needs some more toys or a good long walk in the morning so it'll sleep til lunchtime.

mrsfennel · 20/03/2023 20:04

This would annoy me, also the dog must be upset to bark so much. I cannot fathom just letting my dog bark and bark. if one of ours barks I immediately know its the door or someone outside. (or possibly a squirrel very close to the window/backdoor)

Atethehalloweenchocs · 20/03/2023 20:18

I have a puppy I am teaching not to bark. I cant believe they leave it for so long, besides being totally obnoxious to you, it is not nice to live around.

OnaBegonia · 20/03/2023 20:32

I'd ring the local dog warden and outline the dog is barking for long periods and the owner has stated the dog is in pain, sounds neglectful.

TheWhisker · 22/03/2023 08:00

Thank you for your advice everyone. The dog seems to have stopped barking in the evenings so they're at least showing it some attention now. However, from when one of them goes off to work at 7am, the dog starts barking non-stop all day. It used to be that the other person was in all day so it rarely barked through the day, except for a few times when both were out but now the other one of them must have changed her shift patterns.

I can't work from home through the day when it's barking likE that but I'll monitor it from when I get home and if it barks then more than what it s reasonable, I'll be going to inform the council.
