How much time have you spent travelling, and where would you like to go in future?

I didn't do the gap year thing or any travel in my twenties - just the way things worked out. Was fortunate though to visit European cities in my teens for short breaks, and then again in my thirties.

I've wanted to go to India for a long, long time and hope to some day spend a few months there, doing lots of yoga. Maybe I will be able to do this in my forties.

Would also like to see South East Asia. And Machu Picchu would be amazing.

Where have you been, and where do you want to go in future? Are the destinations you want to see doable in a couple of weeks, or do you want to go for a couple of months some day?

And finally, will long haul travel still be available over the next decade or twenty years, or will it get very expensive?

Just checked the list of UN countries and, all being well, I will reach 60 by the end of this year. I'm just a tourist, though, not what I regard as a proper traveller. Never been brave enough to up sticks and go backpacking on my own. Huge admiration for those of you who do.

My advice is to go where you can, while you can, especially as you never know how things will change. I didn't get to Syria (was booked to go April 2011.

This. I’d loved to have gone to Syria, Russia and Myanmar.

I hit the sweet spot with Myanmar, when Aung San Suu Kyi was at least nominally in charge and before the Rohingya crisis.

Kamchatka (far eastern Russia) was pencilled in for this year until the invasion of Ukraine. Might never get there now.

None. Been abroad on a few package type holidays to Spain and Turkey as a kid. Had a baby when I was 18 and didn't go to uni.

It's something I'd like to do in the future but will have to wait until DS finishes uni as I'll probably have to fund him a bit, which I'm happy to do as I want him to have the opportunities that I didn't.

@Iflyaway

oh you must go if you can. Sadly travel to the more far flung places are not going to be possible for me for a few years but I will do one last big adventure before I’m too past it

I spent 2 months travelling in Europe every summer from aged 18 - 23 - usually interrailing, but not always. All the usual interrail destinations - France, Spain, Morocco, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden etc. Did a few winter and summer seasons as a holiday rep in Europe and the States after that.

Took 18 months off to travel/work when I was 25/26 and went to South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. After that it was just normal work holiday allowance length trips until I was 33 - managed 7 trips to India, Nepal, Russia, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ireland, Sweden again, Finland, Peru, Bolivia, Egypt, Tunisia, the States a few times, then I got made redundant and took off again. I did 6 months in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia and Thailand on the way home.

Since then there has been less travelling - you asked in the OP about whether long haul travel would be expensive, but I see it more as being not very environmentally acceptable. Having said that, I go skiing twice a year in France, which isn't environmentally acceptable either! In the last 10 years I've had a child, so travel has been more limited. We've taken her to Turkey, Greece, Italy, France a lot. I've been to Spain, Estonia, Portugal, Greece again on my own. I took just her to Estonia when she was 4 and to Morocco when she was 8. My partner is very carbon conscious and wants to only travel by train from now on. He knows that I don't have the same level of concern about this. We're going on a 3 week train trip with child this summer to France, Italy and Sardinia., but we're flying to Turkey in October. I expect I'll go and meet my Estonian friend somewhere in Europe in September too.

I've also travelled lots with work in a previous career, but all to places already mentioned above and mostly in Europe. I once went to Sydney for 24 hours and to Cape Town for 3 days. I expect the days of that sort of travel are over.

My wish list: Senegal, Gambia, Togo, Benin, Ghana. Iceland, Norway, Mexico, Costa Rica, Sri Lanka. And I've missed Cambodia 4 times now while visiting Thailand and Vietnam more than once, I should probably go there too at some point.

I love thinking and talking about travelling...

I love traveling and have been to about 70 countries, in a mixture of gap year, sabbatical from work, holidays, living abroad, work trips, study trips, taking advantage of working from foreign offices of my company, a year out after redundancy etc.

My favorites are: Greece, Iceland, Italy, Syria, Iran, Bolivia, Guatemala, NZ.
So many more places I'd love to go - Eg Croatia, Sicily, Venezuela, Uzbekistan, Algeria.

I paused traveling when I had my twins (now 3), but looking forward to trips with them in the future.

MrsTerryPratchett I went to Algeria on a day trip from Corfu, it’s nice.

I think you mean Albania 🤣

toddlermumx · 16/03/2023 18:37

I am 23 and I have been to 36 countries, I did a one month backpacking stint around Thailand a few months before I fell pregnant. Whilst my son is young we've just done Europe but next year I'll have an almost 4 year old and we'll be traveling around Asia for 2-3 months including India too as that's also one of my dream countries! :)

He will then start school september next year though so probably won't do anything longer than 3-4 weeks at a time for a while!

Cityarttrail1 · 17/03/2023 02:04

Currently travelling in Malaysia & Thailand again for a few weeks. Just booked the flights & book the accommodation as we travel around.

I still have Australia, Japan, some parts of America on the to do list

My top tips are travel as much as possible when you are young, fit & healthy

As someone who enjoys travel, I don't spend money on other things like new cars, etc

Cityarttrail1 · 17/03/2023 02:06

I have never had a gap year

The longest that I have travelled is a month at a time
But I have enjoyed many happy months away !

Phoebo · 17/03/2023 04:45

A reasonable trip every year for the last 15 or so years to a different country, usually 2 or 3 weeks. Longest was 6 months. Next place Mexico or Japan. I love to travel

Cassiehopes · 17/03/2023 05:28

I spent most of my adult life backpacking, travelling or living abroad.

I’ve been living abroad in an Asian country for six years now and it still feels like an adventure!

I also married a man from another Asian country so it’s exciting to have two countries to call home! They’re both huge, fascinating countries with amazing food and interesting culture and history.

I did a couple of gap years actually - one travelling around a few African countries, a second doing the typical Asian route (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia).

I also used to save all my money for weekend breaks after Europe before kids!

I love travelling, and living abroad. Honestly it’s a part of who I am and an essential part of my happiness. I couldn’t imagine a life settled down in England without travelling or living abroad again! Although it would be nice to return for a few months every now and then. It’s been years since I’ve been back.

Cassiehopes · 17/03/2023 05:30

(I’ve been deliberately vague with countries because some of them are outing in that they’re not typical tourist destinations and a bit more off the beaten track! So I’m worried someone I know might see the combination of places and realise it’s me 😄)

C1N1C · 17/03/2023 06:18

I've been to about 40 but due to family have been to America maybe 20 times, Thailand maybe 7-8 times etc. We aim to do a city break a month, but my partner is far more adventurous than I am... I'm on about 7 holidays by August and she's on about 15.

I like hot and she likes cold so we have to compromise.

Theskyoutsideisblue · 17/03/2023 06:32

I have done 70 countries. But I think we have been a golden generation for travel. Cheap and available and without the environmental guilt

Polarbearyfairy · 17/03/2023 10:53

I love travelling. For me it was the biggest restriction - I love going on aeroplanes.

My parents took me all round the world as a kid - it was exciting. My mum wonders now why I love flying so much!

Since I've had my DD (11) travelling has entered a new phase, luckily she also loves travelling and likes to go off the beaten track as well as a more relaxing holiday. She's not been outside Europe yet but she's been basically all over Europe.

My favourite place we've been together is Lake Como, we've been back there more than once. My favourite place I've been without her is Zimbabwe - such a beautiful country with so much to see. I love ancient history so I love the Naples region too.
