To ask your advice at start of building project

We've had an estimate for a side and rear extension, but we've never had any building work or renovations of any kind and I'm feeling really vulnerable in this situation of not knowing what I should be asking, what I should be demanding and what to expect.

Any advice gratefully recieved! Few initial queries I have:

Our estimate states what work will be done but doesn't quantify costs associated with these, would a more detailed quote provide this? I'm thinking they've included included bi fold window but we're considering the option of sliding doors instead. How do I know if this would save us money or cost more from from estimate? Similar they've included basic radiators, how much have they allowed for these and what if we can find cheaper/ vertical radiators?

Should I be asking for a separation of costs of materials vs labour?

Would it be normal to be demanding that a building is completed within an agreed time frame, conscious of labour costs that may extend beyond original estimate if things are delayed / dragged out?

Who will manage tradespeople, is there a project manager as such?

Thanks so much for any advice!!

You want a detailed quote breaking down the costs.

Builders are a breed unto themselves, you'll get nowhere with setting a time frame. If you can, go with personal recommendations and check how long they've been trading. Companies with loads of availability are a red flag, it's worth waiting for a good company.

Thank you, do you know how detailed it would be as a quote, specifying cost of individual materials etc?
