To not want my son to be on Love Island

gotthetaste · 14/03/2023 14:16

My son does some modelling and is on Instagram with a few thousand followers (which is not that unusual).

Prior to this current series, he was contacted, via his modelling agency, about going on Love Island.

For various reasons I didn't want him to do it, the main one being the negative effect it can have on contestant's mental health.

He has some quirky ways (which we all
do) and I wouldn't want to see things splashed about him all over the papers.

It was obviously his decision as he's an adult, but I'm so glad he decided against pursuing it!

Out of interest, I just wondered if anyone would have encouraged their kids to go on it?

My dc is registered with a modelling agency which specialises in models with a disability. There was an approach to audition for this and a similar show. I’m glad her reaction was absolutely no. I do think it’s positive they are trying to recruit more diverse contestants inc physical disability but was glad it was not for her.

Fundays12 · 14/03/2023 15:49

No I wouldn't these types of shows can be very bad for people's mental health and fame comes with a huge positive and negative sides too.

CremeEggQueen · 14/03/2023 15:53

I think it's a load of vacuous bollocks and wouldn't want mine on, but at the end of the day it's not up to me, is it their decision as a young adult.

LlynTegid · 14/03/2023 15:54

100% no. Would say the same if it was a daughter.

The show should have been taken off air a long time ago. Jeremy Kyle's show ended after one death, Love Island should have gone after the first one.

I would feel ashamed as a parent that he fit the criteria since narcissistic traits seem to feature strongly in each individual that's on that Shit show.

Don't be nasty.
It was clearly at the initial approach stage - so I doubt they'd even met the OP's sin at that point anyway 🙄

The guy who came 2nd on this current Love Island is blind on one eye. A contest on the previous season who came 4th was deaf from birth

Is this a stealth boast, Op?!
Your son isn’t going on love island- so what’s the point of it, apart from saying he’s a model and has Instagram followers?! 😂

My neighbour’s daughter went on Blind Date years ago, and it was so scripted and awful.

It wasn’t good for her well-being.

Why would it possibly be a stealth boast?

I've changed my name so nobody knows who I am!!!!

I think I’d be mortified if one of my kids went on a show like this.

No, I’ve never see the programme. Yes, I’m a massive snob 😂

Jetstream · 14/03/2023 16:02

Yes I know (she/we do watch!) The models with the agency inc my daughter have more noticeable disabilities so they are obviously hoping to go down of route of contestants with a more obvious disability than sight or hearing. She’s turned down a lingerie shoot too which I was glad about.

Caviarandgelatine · 14/03/2023 16:06

I'd be disappointed they thought they were even suitable for it tbh

What a ridiculous comment

I would worry. The public are notoriously horrible and several contestants have been bullied, had mental health issues after the show and I think there was even a suicide.

Three. Three suicides.

Same here.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 14/03/2023 16:12

I’d be like you, I’d be very worried they’d be torn to bits simply for being human. There’s a girl I follow on Twitter who was a former contestant. Having read her tweets, she’s so insightful and witty, I assume she went on LI to kick-off a media career of some sort. Therefore I don’t assume all the contestants are vacuous and dim. But I think to come out of reality TV well you either need supremely robust mental health and the hide of a rhino, or to be very astute at playing the game and presenting only the aspects of yourself you want strangers to see.

Some people are super-savvy and know by instinct how to show themselves at their best (or else they’ve had some media-training) but I can’t imagine most people in their early twenties come into that category. I’d have been toast, too 😬

endoftheworldniteclub · 14/03/2023 16:15

Princess Sofia of Sweden was on Paradise Hotel. She seems like a nice and decent person. Worked at a hospital during the pandemic.

But no, I really can’t see why you’d be that desperate to be on TV.

Whilst it would be great fun for a young person I think the hate the contestants get is awful. Some of the contestants are so young and reading what people write about them (mainly on Twitter) is horrendous. There’s absolutely no way I’d support any of mine if they wanted to go in there. They wouldn’t anyway but still.

Three suicides?
That’s awful.
x Factor features and exploits vulnerable people, too in my opinion-
One poor girl also committed suicide after being terribly trolled online.
Her clips are financial gold to the programme creators.

raincamepouringdown · 14/03/2023 16:23

I won't watch the show and I would be horrified and disappointed if any of my children 'aspired' to be on a show like that.

BlueLabel · 14/03/2023 16:24

My friend was approached for Love Island a few years ago. She's beautiful and does have a lot of instagram followers but she said no - she was studying for her medicine degree until recently and thought something like love island would only damage her career.

She was approached based purely off followers and looks, so I can't fathom why some of the comments here suggest her parents should be ashamed she was contacted for fitting that criteria.

YANBU!!!
But I doubt he’ll listen.
If you can’t dissuade him just tell him good luck and you’ll always be there for him and love him; whether he makes his fortune or becomes the the internet’s next biggest villain.

Children! You can never safely stop worrying about them. 💐

SherbertDabs · 14/03/2023 16:28

Its had its day now, hasn't it? I'm not sure it'll appeal to any youngsters after this series.
