3 year old falls asleep after nursery in car

On 15 minute drive home and is then an absolute beast when woken up again to go in the house..

It takes a good 10-15 minutes for her to calm down again.

Goes to nursery 8:30-3 pm. No naps

Goes to bed at around 7:30-8 pm and wakes up at around 6:30-7 am. If she goes to bed at 7 pm, she tends to take at 5-5:30.

If she has any kind of nap during the day, she won't go to bed until 9-10 pm.

Any advice ?

Snacks and singing. I get the words wrong and then she has to correct me...silly me

memememe · 14/03/2023 14:15

Can you park a bit further away from nursery so you walk half way then drive the last bit. Some fresh air/exercise on the way to the car should help and then a shorter journey home.

TomatoesAndPeaches · 14/03/2023 14:18

I personally wouldn't give snacks in the back of a car
But each to there own!

leatherlovingluke · 14/03/2023 14:24

Any nap after 3pm is risky. We also had this issue. Windows down in the car, lots of loud singing and questions about nursery. Good luck!

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 14/03/2023 14:30

Have a few really interesting toys (I can recommend some if you like) that she ONLY has at this time. Rotate them so she has a different one each day of the week to keep them fresh.

TheRookie · 14/03/2023 14:32

The only thing that keeps mine awake in the car is chocolate buttons and singing 😂

OhDeeryMe · 14/03/2023 14:33

Won't they let her nap in nursery?!

Orangebadger · 14/03/2023 14:44

Is it possible for her to have an earlier nap at nursery?

When mine was 3, she would sleep until 10pm if she napped that late!

I use to keep her awake, then early dinner followed by bath, it was the only thing that worked with that witching hour! Maybe see if sleep can happen 7.15/7.30 then? Does she have black out blinds in her bedroom? The mornings are getting lighter now!

Abouttimemum · 14/03/2023 14:45

My DS is absolutely beside himself between 5pm and bedtime every nursery day so a 10 minute tantrum would be a joy 😂 I think it’s common for them to be an emotional wreck after nursery though, in all seriousness. Like other pp suggested, the tablet and a snack usually keeps ours awake in the car.

Doveyouknow · 14/03/2023 14:48

Could you walk? Mine always slept in the car - no amount of singing/ snacks etc worked.

LysHastighed · 14/03/2023 14:49

Nap at nursery and later bedtime.

Onnabugeisha · 14/03/2023 14:51

Id let her nap, she’s probably exhausted. Why do you have to wake her up when you get home? At 3 is she not still small enough to carry up and put in her bed?

After the nap do some physical exercise and that will avert the 9-10pm bedtime.

Can you not go in the car?

I mean, what about scooter or bike?

whattood · 14/03/2023 14:54

I'm taking the iPad to pick up today !

It's a good 15 minute drive. Too far to walk.

Give her some chewits. They are a bit fiddly to open so she'll have to focus on them. Open the windows as well.
Sympathies, my boy is the same, it's hell.

Mysterian · 14/03/2023 15:56

Don't let them drive.

maddening · 14/03/2023 15:57

My ds could fall asleep in the car so easily nap or otherwise- even at 12 he can struggle to stay awake in the car, he must find it soothing 😴

BertieBotts · 14/03/2023 15:59

Danger nap! It's totally normal IME, there's a good year to 18 months after dropping the nap that you have to totally avoid car travel in the afternoon.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/03/2023 16:03

Can you go on public transport- not sure what it’s like where you are? That might be fun and interesting and keep her awake.

Or could she have a nap at nursery earlier on?

OnMyWayToSenility · 14/03/2023 16:08

Totally agree with sweets or chocolate or something fiddly to open!
Fresh air
Not too many jumpers or just a t shirt, socks off too.
iPad

God speed it's the worst when they wake up groggy and inconsolable

DESGUSTING · 14/03/2023 16:13

Agree with everyone else!

This was us last year, drive home was chaos but it is worth it not having a danger nap

GettingStuffed · 14/03/2023 16:14

DS 34 still falls asleep in a car

Ostryga · 14/03/2023 16:18

Yeah was going to say I’m 34 and still sleep as soon as I’m a passenger in a car 😂

I like the suggestion of parking further away and having a good walk to the car. Less time in the car with a snack and singing etc should help.

Flangeosaurus · 14/03/2023 13:30

Ah yes, singing at the top of your voice and making loud annoying noises “oh no it’s the mummy siren to say staaaayyyy awaaaakke” while you hurl raisins into the back seat Grin

😂😂
