Hello- need some advice re GCSE options.
My DC is in year 9 and needs to choose the options. DC has so far chosen as his options : History, Geography, Economics and Classics. He is also doing triple science as part of the core.
So my question is - he does not want to do any languages - is that o or does he have to choose a language to broaden his chances at uni/job etc
Thanks

Personally I’d swap one of those for a creative subject or a language, it’s not a balanced set of options and my school wouldn’t allow it for that reason.

You should not just be considering job/uni options in education in my view. Learning a language and being able to speak it reasonably when visiting the country goes a long way and is appreciated.

As a keen linguist, I would be doing a language (two if rules and timetable allowed) but I’ve say in classes with people who clearly have no motivation or aptitude for languages and felt sorry for them and the teacher. If DS doesn’t enjoy it he will get far more out of a subject he does enjoy.

Just showed him this thread and all the advice on here. It looks like there are mire subjects...am confused lol:
4 options
3 science
2 English

Core computing
PE
PSHEE

Isn't that too much. I've emailed the head of options and asked for a chat tomorrow.

Core computing, PE, PSHE won't be examined, they'll be eg 1 lesson each per week. RE similar unless thy have said it will be a short course GCSE.

dapsnotplimsolls · 13/03/2023 19:08

No point in doing a language if he doesn't want to.

Sarahcoggles · 13/03/2023 19:37

My DCs school makes much of this www.gov.uk/government/publications/english-baccalaureate-ebacc/english-baccalaureate-ebacc

3littlebeans · 13/03/2023 20:14

Ours really doesn't bother with the ebacc.

Yet a school down the road insists on a humanities and a language to get it?!

cafesandbookshops · 13/03/2023 21:09

He doesn’t need a language in order to be a pilot so I wouldn’t recommend it unless he’s interested and willing to put the work in. Language GCSEs are hard and teaching them to uninterested pupils or pupils who’ve just picked it for one trip and then don’t put the work in is like pulling teeth. I’m a former languages teacher.

milkysmum · 13/03/2023 21:23

Ah y s English is 2, so 9 in total for my dd, not 10.
She'll also do PE, core computing etc but as someone else said these will be one hour a week, not examined subjects. They are encouraged to choose one creative subject to balance out, particularly if they enjoy it, hence the food tech for her. It won't help in her career options, but she likes it, that's important.

My son had to do a language and it has been a waste of time. Really wish he hadn't had to.

3littlebeans · 13/03/2023 21:51

Yes I'm relieved my daughter's didn't have to!
