To Consider this career move

I currently work for an LA but I’m bored in my role. I managed a few people and enjoy that side of it.
I earn just over £42K and have 28days leave, with the possibility do purchasing 5more, which I do. I work FT over 4days. I commute t the office twice a week, 45mins ish, each way. I can drop my children off and pick them up; DH and I share this. They’re getting older now so just bus stop drop off now.

Im considering a CS role, app £50K, 25days leave, fully remote. I’m hoping it’ll be a challenge but the hols are putting me off. I won’t miss going to the office at all because i’ve had a fully remote role previously and thoroughly enjoyed it

I like spending as many of my children’s holidays as I can with them. I can also take a day off here and there, plus my fridays.

IBU - the move is not worth it
IANB - Go for it

I would have thought with CS you would get flexi and be able to buy holiday?

Ive looked at the terms and conditions but haven’t seen the possibility on there. I might look more closely.

Ive also realised i made an error in my OP. With the recent uplift to our pay, I’m now about £44K, not 42K.

The only promotion I could get is one post, one grade higher and the current occupant is going nowhere.

Little bump!

I moved to the CS. You'll get flexi. It's so flexible that I'll never leave. I'm also home working by choice. It makes such a massive difference having small children that I will just stay here forever!

you can't buy extra leave in the CS, but you do get flexi and policies for things like emergencies are good.

BoredtoRushed · 13/03/2023 11:53

I also get flexi here, although it’s 1.5days a month maximum. With working over 4days though, it’s difficult for me to built it up.

In the CS, although you start on 25 days, it should go up higher, normally to 30 days over a period of 5 to 10 years. Some departments it'll go up with every year to a max of 30. You should also get a privilege day so an extra day off. In some departments, although you can't buy extra leave you can apply for unpaid special leave etc depending on the reasons.

They are also pretty good with flexible working requests - part time, part year, compressed hours. If you want to keep on 4 days you could ask to work compresses hours, it would mean longer days but would be offset with no commute.

I've also known ppl do 4 days but not quite fully compressed I.e. drop down to slightly part time, so 34 hours a week so they've not got to fit in the full 37 over 4 days.

There are many issues and frustrations with the CS but lack of flexibility and ability to have good work life balance isn't one of them.

That’s a good point, actually. I used to work 35hours over 4days before covid but increased my hours to FT because I was doing that and more.

I currently find that my days are very long with the four day FT arrangement but I like my fridays off!

In my department staff can buy up to 5 days a year so it's best for the OP to check with her employer.
