Lol.

Looking back on old photos of me I feel embarrassed. I had a bowl haircut.
We're they popular and if so why did we have them?
You wouldn't dream of having it today?
Curious what was wrong with our hair and styles back then.
Cringe looking at the Pictures.

If you have dead straight hair, a bowl cut is very easy to do at home. If you have a barber refusing child, it keeps them relatively neat looking and the hair out of their eyes.

Speaks from bitter, bitter experience!

My DH had a bowl cut, think it was fashionable and perhaps his dm did it in the 70s Ali g with bell bottoms Wink

I remember being taken to a home hair dresser and dm had them cut my hair short, I really was upset, I was about 6. I tried not to do this to my own dds

We did go to a salon. I didn't have a bowl cut, but I've no idea what style my hair was supposed to be in!

I had that style, I recall it being called a ' page boy '

That was it! My mum always called it that!

A pageboy was a curled under shoulder length bb with fringe.
A purdy was the same style but much shorter(ear length).
The thing with both was the graduation from fringe to length rather than a step from fringe down.
We had a lady who would come to the house to cut all our hair. My younger brothers and I ( older girl) had the same hairstyle for years.

Interesting. I grew up in a pretty wealthy MC family (parents were lawyer and doctor) and it seemed the norm for girls to just have long hair. Certainly none of my friends at private school had a bowl cut that I recall

I suppose I’m thinking of the 1950’s / 1960’s. Whilst skme girls did have long hair, the majority was really quite short compared to todays hair cuts. Look at this photo- the back row in particular

We were commenting on this at work. All the young girls we knew in the early to mid 80s had short hair until age about 8. And I was upper middle class and went to a hairdresser so it wasn’t a hassled mother (we had a nanny) with no time thing.
