AIBU to tell you about our gourmet carrots?

Prepping vegetables for dinner. Nearly 4yo DS walks into the kitchen while I’m peeling carrots. Asks for one; is given it.

I start chopping the carrots and throwing the round pieces into a saucepan. He asks if he can chop them; request denied.

He asks for another carrot, I give him one, thinking he’ll eat it. He proceeds to chomp round bits of carrot, spit them out, wipe the saliva off on his sleeve, and put them in the saucepan.

I shout for DH to join us in the kitchen to see DS helping with dinner prep.

DH observes for a bit and declares “If I get any of DS’s gourmet rustic carrots I’m putting them on his plate”.

Would you eat the gourmet carrots prepped by your DC? 🤭

You can get child safe knives so he can help. Those top push down crinkle cutter ones.
(Although I appreciate you still have to supervise/support and sometimes you just need to get on by yourself so today might not have been the day.)

1 sucked and thrown back in piece would be funny. I'd tell DS no, that's not nice and i'd pick it out of the saucepan and bin it.

But to let him keep on doing it? Why? Confused

CollieFIower · 12/03/2023 15:11

I'd have told him not to be so fucking disgusting and explained why we don't eat things that have been inside anyone else's mouth or put our spit into food when cooking.

And yes I can see he's not quite 4 yet, but it's possible to explain that in an age appropriate way.

Swiftswatch · 12/03/2023 15:13

He proceeds to chomp round bits of carrot, spit them out, wipe the saliva off on his sleeve, and put them in the saucepan.

I don’t understand why you let him put the chewed carrot in the pan. I wouldn’t even let my 20 month old do that never mine 4.

Laiste · 12/03/2023 15:13

@CollieFIower glad it's not just me.

OneTC · 12/03/2023 15:13

Yes I'd eat mouth chopped carrots 🤣 but I also eat food my cat has nibbled and decides he doesn't want

bellac11 · 12/03/2023 15:16

Many years ago, my sister at the dinner table, sucked all the chilli con carne off each kidney bean and then put the shiny clean beans on the edge of her plate (she liked the chilli but not the beans). My mum who clearly hadnt seen the bean cleaning routine said 'dont waste those beans, I'll eat them if you dont like them' and started eating them.

Hilarious and disgusting at the same time. I mentioned it once she had eaten most of the beans!

CollieFIower · 12/03/2023 15:17

This has reminded me of the 3rd birthday party we went to last summer in the heatwave, when the adoring parents of the (PFB) birthday boy let him stand on a chair with no pants on while we sang happy birthday so his willy touched the cake that was on the edge of the table 🤢 and then said nothing when he licked some of the icing off the sides while they were finding a knife to cut it.

They thought it was hilarious and looked surprised that all the adults declined a slice!

6daysaweek · 12/03/2023 15:18

why would you be ok with eating food that someone else has chewed and spit out?! fucking revolting

7Worfs · 12/03/2023 15:18

I didn’t stop him because the carrots will be cooked in boiling water. I told him that’s the reason I let him, the boiling water will kill his germs. 🤷‍♀️

I didn’t realise I’ll be unanimously thought of as an animal. Blush

@SBHon I’ve heard of safe knives but never seen any - I’ll have a look, thank you!

I mean you've done it now OP, someone will no doubt mention 'safeguarding' or some such about saliva covered carrots.

NeverHadANickname · 12/03/2023 15:22

I would definitely eat them 😁 I got a nice set of kids knives from Amazon, DS loves them.

Laiste · 12/03/2023 15:23

Wouldn't it have been better to have just told him ... not to do it. Not that the boiling water will make it ok. What age will it not be ok to chew the veg before cooking it?

We're meant to be preparing our kids for life as an adult.

I mean it's no massive biggie. But it's easier to get them to do it the right way first time than have to go back on yourself later and tell them different.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 12/03/2023 15:23

I'd eat them. So many MNers must be lacking in funny toddler/childhood stories to tell their kids when they're older!

But why would you teach your child that it is ok to spit out food and / or eat food that somebody else has spat out. You should have taught him that this was dirty.

One would be funny. Letting him carry on with the whole lot is just odd.

5128gap · 12/03/2023 15:28

No I wouldn't. The thought of it makes me feel a bit sick (even though I take your point about boiling water) but more importantly because I wouldn't want him to think it was acceptable.

OneTC · 12/03/2023 15:13

I think sharing a bit of food that has been nibbled by a creating that licks it's own arsehole is a bit too far, but I also wouldnt eat the pre chewed carrots tbf 😂

OneTC · 12/03/2023 15:32

Surely loads of people eat food that's been in their kids mouths. I wouldn't eat a prawn that's been sucked for 7 hours but say something that's gone in their mouth and been spat back out again very quickly is fine no?

7Worfs · 12/03/2023 15:37

I get your point that it is not a good lesson. I myself usually say that when it comes to young children, only allow stuff if you are prepared to do it/allow it 1000 times.

But in that moment it looked so funny, and to be honest I was a little surprised that he thought of it. And he looked so proud and sweet. I told him the caveats - boiling water, it’s only our family’s food etc. It was a nice, playful moment and I made the parental decision to let it go.

I’ll update the thread if it comes around to bite me. 👀

😂😂😂

The licking thing probably happens loads with kids that age if they’re left for a minute.

But the willy touching the cake is mental, haha. I thought when he had no pants on that he ended up peeing on the cake. Willy dipping was quite the surprise.

Honestly I was flabbergasted. It wasn't even like they couldn't have noticed. All the other grown ups (and a couple of the older children) were Shock

Laiste · 12/03/2023 16:13

Yeah - cake/willy combo is gross 😂

It wouldn't bother me either, @7Worfs

Obviously wouldn't serve it other ppl but it wouldn't bother me and DP

The willy cake described by PP though, no way 🤢
