To wonder how to get through to the neighbour

We have an H box line across our driveway, and a drop kerb. We need access to our driveway also big signs.
Everybody understands that an H box etc means you can't park across it????

The neighbour dosent and gas spent ages telling me that they are going to park there if they want and the line dosent mean anything. Feeling so worn out trying to explain.

How do you get through to people like this? Even when I say it's law etc they aren't having it. Its taking it out of me. I know they are always going to argue back and it's affecting my mental health.

Stop discussing it with them, if they park across it - report them to the police or council or whoever it is that enforces parking laws around you. Then let the authorities deal with their attitude

WhatHaveIFound · 12/03/2023 13:08

Sounds like you'll never get through to them. I would photograph their car every time they park there and then you have evidence for the police/council.

Murdoch1949 · 12/03/2023 16:50

I don’t know what an H box is, but I would never block a dropped kerb. You are wasting your time with this neighbour. Just park your car in front of your dropped kerb.

Murdoch1949 · 12/03/2023 16:53

Just looked it up. It is an offence to park there, with penalty fine, without your permission. Photograph the transgressions, document time, duration etc, then contact council.

Badger1970 · 12/03/2023 16:55

So why are they blocking your driveway?

Cherrysoup · 12/03/2023 16:59

Park there yourself?

Aquamarine1029 · 12/03/2023 17:03

Document and call the police, every time.

magicmole · 12/03/2023 17:15

H markings themselves don't have any legal standing. They're just a visual reminder. But that doesn't really matter because it's the parking in front of a dropped kerb which is the issue and that IS an offence and a local council can issue penalty notices for obstruction.

From one council: "For enforcement, the presence of a white 'H' line is not necessary because the law is being broken every time parking takes place in front of any dropped kerb driveway".

But enforcement officers do use H markings as proof an offence has been committed.

Daftasyoulike · 12/03/2023 17:28

I think I'd be inclined to find an article online about it being illegal, print it off, together with the website address, and pop it through their letterbox. In the meantime start taking photos, and if they don't stop once they've had a chance to read the note, you'll have evidence ready to send to the council. Oh, and keep a copy of the note, then you can show it to the council and that will prove that you've gone out of your way to advise the neighbours, but they just won't listen.

JudgeRudy · 12/03/2023 17:40

Sounds to me ike they could well agree/understand its illegal but they're of the opinion 'what are you gonna do about it'. Well show them. It would certainly be worth documenting the transgressions with both pictures and calls to 101. Esure you ask them to move each time and site the law. It's unlikely that the police will act at this stage but you need to have this evidence so that you can show that in the past you have taken reasonable steps. I'd get the car towed. No calls, or door knocking (remember you tried that previously which you have documented). This might spur them into action.....or there could be a breach of the peace. Ultimately it will be dealt with. Depending on their occupations these convictions could affect their job.

Darkstar4855 · 12/03/2023 17:46

Have they actually parked across it or are they just saying they will? If it’s the latter then I wouldn’t even bother engaging with them about it.

DDivaStar · 12/03/2023 18:16

Are they parking over your dropped kurb or overhanging the h line?

journeyofsanity · 12/03/2023 18:55

I thought I read on MN that whilst it's a shit thing to do, it wasn't actually illegal to park across a dropped kerb and it was only actioned by authorities if someone doing so blocked you in.
Can anyone clarify please?

It seems to depend
Where I live (one of the London boroughs) we can register our dropped kerbs.
Then, if anyone parks across any of it, we can call the council parking enforcement team and they will come and ticket them.
They usually only park there once.....

timeforchampagne · 12/03/2023 22:04

Speak to the council to find out what you need to do

timeforchampagne · 12/03/2023 22:04

But your neighbour is an idiot.

Mumsanetta · 12/03/2023 22:16

Stop wasting your breath on people who aren’t listening to you. You’ve given them a chance so now you move on to enforcement as mentioned by PP.

Chickenly · 12/03/2023 22:19
  1. Every time they do it, take a photo, record the time and date and report them. Every single time.
  2. Send them a cease and desist letter., you can get a template from Google. If they continue then send them a letter before action. Again, template from Google.
lamaze1 · 12/03/2023 22:24

if they block you in report to the police. Police will get in contact with them.

ChellyT · 13/03/2023 01:13

I understand your frustration and feel for you whole heartedly.

I would not engage or pay any attention to how or where your neighbour parks unless it hinders my travels and then I'd probably pop off big time. Please take your own peace of mind into account and look after you and your MH

Enthrallingstoryofstillnessandlight · 13/03/2023 01:19

Sounds like my bloody father, you won't win trying to talk him around OP, take the advice on here and good luck

MRex · 13/03/2023 06:44

Call the parking enforcement officer to give them a ticket, every time. Ours were happy to come for a random workman who decided it was fine to park on our drive when he wanted, but could only ticket when the van was still there. He was just rude to us, but they only had to ticket him once for him to learn.
