To want clothes to be the size they say they are 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t even care any more if they use vanity sizing and say a 34 inch waste is a size 10. But I want the clothes that say they are a 32 inch waist to have a 32 inch waist?! I’ve lost a significant amount of weight in the last year or so and have to order new clothes for a new job but it’s proving impossible.

I’m currently wearing a series of size 8 - 10 clothing. I’m very active but have a BMI of 26 and fit the measurements of a size 14 or 16. I must have tried on hundreds of dresses, tops and jeans recently based on their size charts and every single one is too big. I’ve measured the clothes myself in frustration and they are much bigger than what they say.

I end up re-ordering in a smaller size and again … and again til I’m wearing a size 8 when I’m nowhere near. I wear a 34 E bra and my legs are toned but nowhere near a size 8. What do people who are actually an 8 do?!

Mens clothing does not do this. If I order a medium based on measurements it fits. Meanwhile I just ordered some older clothes on eBay from Boden circa 2013 (haven’t liked anything since) in my actual size and they fit.

Has anyone found any shops that are actually making clothes in the size they say they are? I really don’t care what number it says on the label but am driving myself and the postman mad with all the returns and I can’t live in leggings forever. This is not cheaper clothing either - I’ve had the same from supermarket all the way up to the expensive ranges.

YANBU - sizing should reflect the size chart

YABU - the surprise of the actual size of what arrives is part of the fun

I ordered the same pair of trousers from Next in its 2 available colours. Both should be the same, just a different colour denim.

Nope - black pair perfect length but tighter waist.

  • blue pair perfect waist but about 4 inches too long.

I checked and double checked and the size labels on them are the same. Clearly a mis-labelling.

I bought 2 pairs of jeans from White Stuff; same size, same style, different colours.

The blue pair fit me perfectly but the black pair are much tighter in the leg and practically cut off the circulation to my knees.

It's fucking infuriating, especially as I didn't bother trying on the black pair for a while, and now it's too late to return them.

I was always a 6-8 now I'm a 4. It's shit. It's really hard to find anything to fit me.

We're getting fatter and the market is adapting.

But why is a size 10 now much larger than it used to be?

If people gain weight, they can buy larger sizes. Manufacturers don't need to change the sizing?

I have always been a size 10, but for the last 4-5 years or so I've been buying size 6 or 8 and these clothes are as large as my old size 10 clothes!!

Last year I was a bit underweight due to illness, there was nothing in high street stores to buy. (Apart from maybe primark but the v small sizes also were for toned 17 year old who want to show belly and side boob)
In Dunnes XS was falling down while my mum who was 5 stone heavier was in a medium.

Now I'm mainly a 6, but I took a chance on the most amazing shirt maxi dress from coast in an 8, and it won't even button - whereas an m&s 6 still has room for about 6 massive meals back to back.

It's ridiculous

I feel for you OP. Nothing ever fits as expected - so sick of shopping for clothes. You simply cannot go by their charts - I should be a 14 according to the chart for the last pair of trousers I bought - but the 10 fits me perfect. So annoying. You end up simply taking a punt!

Hey can't women's clothing be sized like mens

Chest size
Waist size
Seat size
Inside leg

In normal measurements rather than a 12, 14 etc what does that even mean?

I bought a pair of jeans I really liked from Next recently, so ordered another pair - same size, same colour. The waist on the new ones was two inches smaller. The legs fit the same though, so it's not mislabeled - just wrong waist band. Or do mine have the wrong waistband? Who knows. It's so fucking annoying.

Someone who worked in Bravissimo once told me that black clothes will always fit smaller - it's something to do with the dying process. I've always checked this when trying on different colours of the same garment, and it's always the case.

The sizing numbers are based on archaic methods of scaling.

There is far more variation in women's bodies and in clothing styles than in men's, so the measurement by inches thing is much more complicated. Although some vintage style stores do measure by waist size.

Some of them also make a point of using sizing from the 50s so you will indeed find yourself a couple of sizes larger. So much for vanity sizing...
