To think labels do more harm then good

I have suffered with mh problems for my whole life and had diagnosis of anxiety and depression from being a child. I got diagnosed with bpd about 5 years ago and I honestly feel like it has done more harm then good. There is very little available treatment for it so no actual benefit for the diagnosis. All that has happened since diagnosis is that medical staff have treat me worse, social services have treat me worse and job opportunities have been more difficult to come by. I really regret being given this diagnosis and now understand why a lot of psychiatrists aren't willing to give it due to stigma surrounding it.
Yabu diagnosis only help people to get the best care.
Yanbu labels stigmatise people

For many dangerous MH conditions it's not possible to access the correct medication without the diagnosis. It can help to understand how the condition manifests at various times.

I agree that being diagnosed BPD comes with huge negatives and no real positives.

I have BPD and while we are treated like scum of the earth for having a PD, it did actually help me understand why i act like i do and to try and change the way i deal with life and people.

I think that it can go either way really. Sometimes a diagnosis is really helpful because it can direct you towards the right treatment and allow those around you to gain a better understanding of your difficulties. On the other hand, most mental health diagnoses are associated with stigma.

Interestingly, I think there has been a move towards conceptualising BPD as a form of complex trauma in recent years and hopefully that might bring about a shift in the way services manage it but I can imagine it is one of the most unhelpful labels to have as it often leads to services 'giving up' on a patient. The only thing I can imagine that it might help with is directing you towards DBT- have you had any/found it helpful at all?

Sorry should have read the thread about DBT. It sounds like your diagnosis is entirely unhelpful!

Can you ask to be reassessed or seek a private Psychiatrist appointment (they're expensive but might be worthwhile as a one off) to see if they can reconsider your diagnosis? Sometimes Depression, Complex PTSD, Anxiety, Menopausal symptoms etc. can be misdiagnosed as BPD.

75% of sufferers of BPD are women and it's sort of taken the place of the 'hysteria' of the past, when actually it can be a combination of cumulative trauma, Clinical Depression etc. and just a handy label for medical professionals to hand out when they cannot or will not help.

Useless aren't they! I had the home
treatment team say I "probably" do have BPD and to do some online research Hmm so I said I have researched it and DBT is the therapy used and they said I don't meet the criteria for that?

I do have an appointment with the community mental health team but I'm not holding any hope.
