3 years ago I developed seborrheic dermatitis completely out of the blue and it very quickly spread across my scalp. It’s now across my whole scalp as well as inside and around my ears. There isn’t a single mm of my scalp with it.

i visited a doctor who was utterly shocked and said they had never seen seborrheic dermatitis as severe as this. They were completely lost for words and immediately we did blood tests to check my immune system which didn’t show any problems thankfully.

since then we have tried everything imaginable. All the over the counter products for example t gel, nizoral and hibiscrub (among millions of other things). We have also tried antibiotics, steroid creams/solutions, steroid tablets, Anti fungal creams/shampoos/solutions and anti fungal tablets. I was also under a dietician and have done every elimination diet possible from sugar to dairy to gluten to yeast to literally everything.

Nobody knows why this happened so suddenly and why it’s so severe. And sadly nobody seems to be able to treat it.

its obvious and embarrassing and also extremely uncomfortable too.

does anyone know anything about this and why this has happened? And what I can do to fix it?

Are you allergic to nickel? My scalp was awful when I was younger and improved a lot when I realised I was allergic and stopped using my metal pin hairbrush. Nickel can also be found in food.

The only things that really helps me when I have a flare up is antibiotics and wearing gloves to stop me picking/scratching.

My daughter has this, it cleared up mainly from a holiday in the sun but the bits that haven't I've tried everything on, the only thing that has helped is coconut oil (you can buy a fractionated fully liquid version) to soak in the scalp

cocksstrideintheevening · 11/03/2023 22:52

Op have you posted before with pictures? If not you try a search, there is a woman who has been really struggling with similar and lots of advice, I'll see if I can find a link...

I've had terrible psoriasis brought in by a viral infection. Scalp badly affected. Treatment shampoos did nothing.
I found body shop banana hair mask plus lush scalp cream worked in combination with oral drugs.
Definitely see a dermatologist

Try this all natural, non medicated shampoo. It has been amazing for cradle cap.

Pick the unscented option until your scalp has recovered.

It sounds awful I really feel for you. But having a thread every week about it isn’t going to help, I’m afraid nobody here is going to have any cures or tips that weren’t mentioned on all the other threads you’ve had about the problem

I’ve never posted about it before! I’ve seen lots of threads about eczema and psoriasis with advice but none about sebboreic dermatitis. They are different conditions!

My DS developed this immediately after his vaccinations, of course we aren't meant to say that's what caused it though! After many doctors and dermatologist appointments, allergy tests and dietitians, I saw a homeopath who treated it within 2 weeks and it never returned (again, MN will turn itself inside out telling me that can't have happened!)

What was the treatment? I'll try anything, I have this on the crown of my head.

Could you be in peri-menopause? My skin went mental when I was in peri-. HRT has helped a lot, although I still have small dodgy patches.

Me too - under both arms and now on the crown of my head. Hrt is helping but I’m desperate to sort this out. I’ve been told it’s a long wait to see a dermatologist- have you been seen in hospital op?

Roaccutane/ Isotretinoin! You will probably have to pay for a private derm to get a prescription. If you google there are lots of studies and also Reddit is a good source of info onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ijd.13408

I’m prescribed it from NHS consultant dermatologist (but for acne). OP please ask your GP or dermatologist about it.

Fraaahnces · 12/03/2023 17:49

I developed seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea as well as alopecia (no doubt caused by the SD…) Anyhow, was prescribed Spironolactone by the derm for alopecia which is an androgen blocker. This helps reduce sebum production. Within a couple of months, my SD completely disappeared.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 12/03/2023 18:41

UVB treatment?
Tar treatment?
Methotrexate?
Dupixent?

All things to ask about

Thisismadness · 12/03/2023 18:48

If you’re on Facebook join the Caroline Hirons skincare group, people there will have advice for you I’m sure.

MorganKitten · 12/03/2023 19:48

Push for dermatology
Coconut oil on your scalp over night can soften the scales, shampoo on it before putting water on though. Then the next night any product they have given you.

Spidergloves · 12/03/2023 20:12

I haven't found anything that works yet but I am covered head to foot in psoriasis (which started after covid).

Me too! I finally have GP appointment for next week as it is not getting any better. I hope it gets you somewhere!

Dibblydoodahdah · 22/09/2023 13:01

Hi @Daffodil12321 did things improve for you? I am really struggling with Seborrheic dermatitis on my face at the moment and feeling very down about it.

Skyisbluegrassisgreen · 22/09/2023 13:08

No it hasn’t she recommended seeing a homeopath. Remedies are 100% based on the individual so the there is no reason to think the remedy that worked for her husband would help the op. They need a remedy tailored to them as an individual.

Dibblydoodahdah · 22/09/2023 13:12

@Skyisbluegrassisgreen I don’t understand your response. Are you the OP?
