To think they should have moved for customers

Arrived a few minutes early for my hair appointment and the small sofa had a mum and daughter taking it. No problem, they were there first and it probably won’t be long. I stand around waiting for my appointment (so as not to drip feed I’ve been standing all morning and would have preferred to sit down). As I’m stood there I realise that they are there to ask about a Saturday job for the daughter. Now probably the salon owner should have asked them to stand up, but don’t you think that’s common sense - that if you’re there for a job you don’t occupy the only seats and make the paying customer stand?

Huh? They were there first. Unless you are elderly or disabled or the (late) Queen, YABVVU!!

If I were hiring, it wouldn't create a great first impression!

Exactly. Clearly they don't have a customer-first mindset. I'd be binning her application form.

To be fair it’s the way it works in hospitality. I’ve worked in swanky hotels. At your induction you are told it’s by the last time you will come in the front door or sit in front of customers.

Exactly.

That's true too, I agree with this (as a prospective hire)

Unless you are over 70yo or are on crutches/walking stick/frame YABVU.

frozenyoghurtyurt · 12/03/2023 08:29

Yeah I've worked in hospitality and customer service roles a long time too. I'd never go to an interview and take the seat of someone who was potentially a customer.

I suspected i would be told I WBU. I was just really surprised because if it had been me (and I always worked as a kid), well firstly I wouldn’t have taken my mum with me to help me ask for a job, but I definitely would have offered my seat to a customer. But I’m hearing my attitude is old fashioned.

I agree with you 100%. Getting up to offer you the seat would have made the applicant look observant, polite and considerate, so if she had any sense she'd have done that even if she gave no shits for your comfort. Bringing her mum in with her and lolling about on the sofa... ugh. I hope they don't hire her.

YABU they were there waiting to speak to someone, just like you were waiting for your hairstylist.

Don't you see the difference. The OP was a CUSTOMER who was paying for a service. The people sitting their were hoping to get a job. Customer comfort should always take precedence, especially over someone who may or may not get a job!

itsgettingweird · 12/03/2023 10:29

I'd encourage my child to stand up and move to one side to make a good impression to a potential employer that I put the clientele central to my role and provide a good experience.

But then I worked customer service in the 90's and 00's when customer service was .... well - just that!

Nowadays it's each person to their own IME and too dog eat dog.

I think to bin someone's application form based on that would be foolish. She might turn out to be a very good employee.

stbrandonsboat · 12/03/2023 17:49

I'd expect to be able to sit down if I was a customer. A potential employee should demonstrate good customer service by being polite and recognising that a customer might like to sit.

I guess that's not the modern way though 🙄

I went for an ultrasound scan when I was eight months pregnant as they suspected an abnormality.

The waiting room was full of sofas and every single seat was filled with the entire family of one pregnant woman. Her whole family must have been there. Me and another pregnant woman were standing, waiting, and not one of the fuckers stood to allow us to sit. It was mind blowing. They were all there for a ‘gender reveal’.

I was fit and well and was prepared to stand and glare to see, out of interest, if any of them would move. Nope. The other woman was struggling though so I told the woman on the desk and she had to come and ask people to move. They wouldn’t. Unreal.

Sorry, any excuse to tell that story about sofa hoggers.
