To ask if I've misunderstood?

My hair salon put the following on their Facebook page on Wednesday:

"Models required for the 17th March from 10am .

Short / pixie haircuts

Curly blowdry

All cuts and blow drys will be free of charge

Contact us for more information and to get booked in!"

They then tagged the Instagram of the salon apprentice.

I haven't had my hair cut since last May so it desperately needs doing but due to the cost of living and the fact I'm majorly struggling financially (I'm self employed and have lost a couple of clients in the last few months due to them either not needing my services anymore, or them having to cut costs in their business) I've not been able to spare the money, so the thought of a free haircut is very appealing!

I didn't see the FB post until quite a few hours after it was originally posted so I messaged them to ask if they still needed people for short haircuts on 17th March. They responded that they did and asked if I was interested. I said I was and they sent me the appointment times available. I asked for the one I wanted and they responded to say it was booked in.

I was very excited at the thought of a free haircut (I normally have very short hair so my hair growing out to this length is driving me crazy) however my friend said that I've misunderstood what they have asked for. She said that they wanted people WITH short hair for a haircut, not that they want people to have their hair cut short. She also said that as they mentioned the blow dry for curly hair but not for the short/pixie haircuts that it wouldn't be free. She also wasn't sure if they would understand from my message that my message was referencing their FB post and that they would charge me the normal rate for whoever was cutting the hair.

I'm now paranoid that I'm going to go for the haircut and end up getting charged, which I really can't afford (not even the apprentice rates). I assumed they would realise that I was referencing their post but now it's made me question whether she is right that they want people with short hair (mine is shoulder length ish) and that I'll end up having to pay, or that they do think it's just a normal haircut and I'll have to pay - either way, I can't spare the money! I've never booked through a FB message before as I normally book online via their website, but I would assume that if they thought I was just booking a normal appointment, they would ask if I wanted an appointment with someone in particular.

Anyway, as she's now got me worried that I'm going to end up having to pay, I thought I'd see what other people think. Have I misunderstood what the salon was offering or has my friend misunderstood?

Just ring and ask ! Explain about the length of your hair, and ask if wash and blow dry is included in the price.
The curly blow might be free, but not the wash.

If it's training then I think you're right, but can you not ask them? Send a message saying something like "can I confirm it's ok that I have shoulder length hair which I'd like to be cut to very short?" The time consuming and harder bit is the shaping, not the initial chop to short, so I think you'd be fine.

HareintheBluebells · 10/03/2023 11:41

@DoulaBriaAI Are you actually an AI or just posting in the style of one?

OP, I think you are right but why not ring and check if you are worried?

That's really interesting. It's very good but definitely has an AI feel-the whole "It sounds like..." opening, summarising what OP has said etc. Plus it's too polite and balanced to be a human 😂

MirabelMax · 10/03/2023 11:53

Just call them and clarify it. A load of mumsnetters giving you their take on it isn't particularly helpful really.

BuffaloCauliflower · 10/03/2023 11:55

I think you’re right but definitely worth clarifying. Just message or call them and check, it’s fine.

PriOn1 · 10/03/2023 11:56

”All cuts and blow drys will be free of charge”

This seems quite unequivocal to me, but if you are worried, then give them a ring.

Fatmamslim · 10/03/2023 11:59

"Hi, sorry just wanted to check my appointment is for the free haircut for your trainee, my hair is currently shoulder length and I'd like to short. Just checking I meet the criteria and haven't made a mistake! Thanks"

Job done.

The post did sound weird to me and stood out straight away. Not unhelpful as an answer but very scripted and formal.

Yeah op, just ring and ask them but I interpreted it same as you did.

Fatmamslim · 10/03/2023 12:00

Your friend sounds... weird. I think the post is very clear and it's as if she's tried to worry you? Is she always like this?

Thighdentitycrisis · 10/03/2023 12:02

@DoulaBriaAI
yiur post reads as AI immediately.
I wonder how long before we all become accustomed to this style of writing?

Am not in the tech world at all but my son coincidentally went to an A1 conference at the Excell centre this week! Had never heard of this before TBH .

Absolutely fine to call up the salon and clarify:

  • I have booked with you for X based on the post, can I check this is correct on your side
  • Can I check this will be completely free of charge
  • This is my current hair length/type - is that ok?
  • Can I clarify exactly what will happen during the appointment?
Gincan · 10/03/2023 12:58

It literally says "All cuts and blow drys will be free of charge" but there's nothing wrong with phoning them to check. I live in a very "naice' area with some crazy expensive hair dressers. I have phoned up before to check the price etc, it's fine to do that.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 10/03/2023 13:09

I read it the same as you OP. Definitely phone to check, I don't know what advert your friend is reading. Can you post a screenshot of the advert. Happy new hair cut x

dementedpixie · 10/03/2023 13:20

Message them again just to confirm your hair cut is the one offered free by the apprentice.

GoGoGoFigureItOut · 10/03/2023 15:24

Thanks all, I know I need to contact them to find out for sure but just wanted some other opinions and to know if I was being really dense for reading it the way I read it.

Your friend sounds... weird. I think the post is very clear and it's as if she's tried to worry you? Is she always like this?

She can be! I think she's quite insecure so she projects what would worry her about a situation, and then it makes me doubt myself.

Can you post a screenshot of the advert.

I've literally copy and pasted the FB post in my original post - the only thing I've left out is the Instagram handle of the apprentice hairdresser and a couple of pictures of previous customers with their hair cut short.
