Being asked to strip beds in holiday cottage

We have just returned from a long weekend in the Lake District which was organised by my DD. We stayed in a very nice cottage. The day before we left, the letting agent texted my DD asking us to leave the place clean and tidy (fair enough, we would do that anyway) but they also asked us to strip the beds. AIBU in thinking this was very cheeky? The cost of cleaning would be included in the rental price and since we were expected to vacate by 10am, we didn't have that much time in the morning. I know it doesn't take much time, but I go on holiday to get away from such chores.

I always strip the beds - often do in a hotel too! And always offer at a friend's.
Wouldn't bother me being asked. Saying that- I'm happy to do a basic wipe down of surfaces and make sure the washings all done but I'm not into this hoovering and mopping some seem to expect. I would leave the bathrooms clear (I'd never leave a dirty toilet for myself let alone anyone else!) But I'm not cleaning the bathroom down. To me that's what the cleaning fee is for.

Soproudoflionesses · 09/03/2023 17:00

This boils my piss too op.

IkBenDeMol · 09/03/2023 17:05

I will do it if asked to do so. It's not a big job, takes 5 minutes. And the kids do their own beds, chuck used towels in the bath. I will also empty bins and make sure that the dishwasher is done AND emptied.

But if I am paying for cleaning I am not hoovering, or dusting, or cleaning the bathroom.

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/03/2023 17:05

Stripping the bed, emptying the bins, doing the washing up I think are all reasonable requests. I would be surprised about being asked to clean.

fizzyfood · 09/03/2023 17:07

I don't find a problem with stripping the beds. Had to do it at haven during covid.

fizzyfood · 09/03/2023 17:08

Also put the dishwasher on and empty rubbish before leaving.

sqirrelfriends · 09/03/2023 17:09

It’s normal unfortunately and part of the reasons I no longer do these types of holidays.

last place we went to asked for beds to be stripped, washing up done (fair enough) and for the floor to be mopped (fuck off). Check out was 9am which I wouldn’t have jinxed too much but she was an hour and a half late for the 4pm check in.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/03/2023 17:10

We had to do this since covid. The check out time was also an hour earlier. So felt like a real drudge at the end of a lovely holiday to start pulling covers off heavy duvets.

I don't see the issue with stripping the beds to be honest and have done it before , it doesn't take long

There can be occasional issues with this 1) bodily fluids are hidden, linen would need handling differently and may require different cleaning methods or even binning. 2) guests personal effects may get wrapped up in the linen and missed until it’s too late and they’ve already been through the washer - potentially damaging the items/linen/machine.

PeekAtYou · 09/03/2023 17:14

I've only booked places where cleaning was an extra that you could pay for.
Stripping the beds wouldn't bother me at all.

Enthrallingstoryofstillness · 09/03/2023 17:16

I run an Airbnb, no way do I expect guests to strip beds, wash up or take out rubbish. They're on holiday, I do it all and more than happily.

NewShoes · 09/03/2023 17:16

Yes, we have been on many cottage holidays in the UK and stripping the beds is a fairly routine request.

FebName · 09/03/2023 17:16

All those people saying they strip the beds in a holiday cottage, so you do the same in a hotel??

It's fucking weird! No way would I be stripping beds. Fuck that!

PP said it's just polite to do that. Do you also clean the public toilets as that would be polite too!

TeaAndStrumpets · 09/03/2023 17:17

OP surely the previous occupant would have aired your bed before it was made up? Sounds like quite a good system.

MyMarmite · 09/03/2023 17:19

I refuse to do this - I don't do it at home, my cleaner does and I'm certainly not doing it on holiday. No way. It's cheeky.

amershamfc · 09/03/2023 17:19

I always strip them in holiday let's, hotels, B&Bs, friends houses etc. it seems grim to leave them for someone else whether I've paid or not.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 09/03/2023 17:20

Fairly normal request in my experience.

Mindymomo · 09/03/2023 17:21

In Sept 2020 we were asked to strip beds, 4 beds took me 30 minutes. Next year we went to the same cottage, but wasn’t asked to. Where we stayed last year, owner said she paid cleaners £350 each changeover, so no wouldn’t be happy stripping beds there. I do put towels and tea towels near the washing machine. We went to a European Centre park type place, didn’t know about stripping beds, I got charged extra for not doing it.

DoNotGetADog · 09/03/2023 17:22

YANBU

I hate this. I don’t do it even if they ask you to.

I hate changing bedding at home and I’m certainly not starting on holiday

I don’t want to see the manky stained mattress.

MrsDooDaa · 09/03/2023 17:23

I find stripping bedding strange.

I leave rental items as found. So sheets on, bins emptied, dishwasher emptied.

pointythings · 09/03/2023 17:23

I've always stripped beds, even before COVID. Always made sure cooker and countertops were decent, floors swept, dishes clean, dry and put away. Just basic good manners.

FlounderingFruitcake · 09/03/2023 17:24

Absolutely not, I’d leave a negative review about the fact they even asked because it’s unprofessional.

livingthegoodlife · 09/03/2023 17:24

I have a holiday cottage near Padstow. I'd never ask guests to strip beds, or clean. Leave it tidy - yes please. But nothing else. If anything if rather they didn't, I put all my posh white linens straight in a linen bag. They have more chance of picking up bits if left on the floor.

I think it's a hangover from COVID. I think guests should enjoy themselves especially on their last morning!

averylongtimeago · 09/03/2023 17:24

We include cleaning in our cottage rental costs. I prefer if guests don't strip the bed tbh, as then I can see and pretreat any stains. I did ask guests to strip beds and to bag the dirty laundry during covid as there was supposed to be a high risk from handling soiled bedding. I would quarantine them for a few days before washing.
I do ask guests to empty the bins and to put the rubbish in the correct bin for recycling and to put their breakfast pots in the dishwasher.

All our French guests leave the place spotless, as do most of the Dutch families. Mixed generational U.K. guests- not so much!

HamBone · 09/03/2023 17:25

We regularly stay in a cabin and the owner asks us to strip the beds and put the sheets in a hamper for the cleaner to wash. I don't have a problem with it, tbh, it only takes a few minutes.
