To Think Stanley Johnson Should Get A Peerage.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/03/2023 13:52

Over the past 13 years, the Tory Party has lied, manipulated media, destroyed our rights, and our economy, the environment, our health and education services, our reputation abroad and pushed our democracy and laws beyond breaking point for their own benefit.

So AIBU to think that Ex PM Johnson' s blatant nepotism represents the cherry on the banana republic cake that is the UK? And we should all suck it up because that's that's what Britain is now?

Sparklesocks · 09/03/2023 13:53

Apathy is exactly what they want

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/03/2023 14:30

I'm not proposing "apathy" @Sparklesocks, more acceptance of reality.

This Conservative government have shat on the British working and middle class from a high height. The only people who matter to this Tory government are their wealthy donors, friends and family. Boris Johnson giving his dad a peerage is a clear demonstration that the UK is a corrupt, weak nation and we need to stop pretending otherwise.

Only then can we change.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/03/2023 14:57

There is a petition asking PM Sunak to block the peerage of Stanley, but he won't. Not even if every person in the country signs, because Dishy Rish is dishing out our dosh to his own family.

The UK is now a banana Republic.

OP posts:
Roussette · 09/03/2023 15:02

Why on earth would you 'accept this reality'?

That is just apathy and means any government can do anything.

I don't accept anything and if there were a March to call out this lying useless Government, I'd be on it.

What's the use of saying we just have to accept it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/03/2023 15:34

What's the use of saying we just have to accept it.

We've no choice. There's nothing we can do about it. As I said, it wouldn't matter if everyone in the country objected to this blatant nepotism, PM (unelected by the country or even his own party members) Sunak will not block it in case it draws attention to the fact he's siphoning off UK money into his own family coffers.

This is the reality of Britain in 2023 and there's nothing we can do about it until this bunch of corrupt, anti-democratic Tories fuck off in 2 years time.

I think you're wildly optimistic if you expect to have anyone other than a bunch of corrupt, anti-democratic people in government in 2 years time. Maybe they won't be Tories this time, probably a Labour/SNP coalition, but the corruption and anti-democratic views will remain. Corruption and skirting round democracy have long been an essential part of being in government and it's naive - almost offensively so - for anyone to genuinely believe otherwise. Who were the last "honest" government? The Blair/Brown years were appalling, the Major years had scandal after scandal as I remember it. Thatcher? Thought not.

DutchKatje · 09/03/2023 15:40

I’ve already signed the petition I’m afraid.

It is ludicrous and frustrating that we’ve sunk so far <sigh>

Roussette · 09/03/2023 15:44

I'm not convinced it will go through. It's not a done deal yet.

221,000 have already signed the Independent's petition to block this. And that isn't the only petition

What did any of those administrations, even Thatcher's, do that compares with the blatant, sickening and relentless corruption we have now? Give specific examples.

Pretty sure we had a couple of million on the stop Brexit/2nd referendum petitions and it did nothing. I used to get excited about those petitions. Now...not so much.

StaunchMomma · 09/03/2023 17:11

It's an absolute feckin shitshow, as ever.

Not surprising at all from Boris though, is it?

Tory nepotism at it's finest norm!

StuartBroadshairband · 09/03/2023 17:14

Never mind a peerage, I wish the fucker had got a vasectomy in the late 50s. The country would be a better place.

jcyclops · 09/03/2023 17:14

It is rumoured that Boris has nominated Stanley for a knighthood, not a peerage. Stanley has had a career that could warrant a knighthood when you compare it to others who have been knighted. The absolutely disgusting part is that it is his son that has nominated him. Many comments from across the political spectrum are objecting to son nominating father, and not to Stanley receiving an honour.

I am also angry at others rumoured to be on Johnson's resignation honours list, such as Mad Nad Dorries (for services to not having a clue about Channel 4 whilst trying to privatise it), Allegra Stratton (for services to laughing about lockdown parties) and various Tory donors. Mind you SIR Kier Starmer has also made dodgy nominations for honours, such as Tom Watson (for services to paedo fantasists and conspiracy theorists as long as the targets were Tories).

Is Sunak dishing out money to his own family? Is this known?

newnamethanks · 09/03/2023 17:18

Remind me how the Thatcher family came by its baronetcy.

LlynTegid · 09/03/2023 17:26

@coffeerevelsrule I agree with you that it is unfair to the period of Margaret Thatcher's time in office to compare it as similar to the last few years of this current government.

I doubt if anyone other than maybe Ben Wallace would be competent enough to have been in any one of Mrs Thatcher's cabinets. The miners would have won their battles in 1984/85 if any of the current and last two Prime Ministers/cabinets had been in charge. Argentina would have successfully held on to the Falkland Islands.

If Mrs Thatcher had been in charge during the pandemic, at least 20,000 fewer people would have died, there would have been no parties in Downing Street, and the reduction in restrictions would have been more understanding of how the economy works.

Well to stay exactly on topic, Thatcher knighted Jimmy Savile, despite being begged not to by senior civil servants.

Johnson's abusive nature seems pretty light in comparison to Savile.

However, the establishment has always been happy to include and honour corrupt, abusive men.

This latest iteration is just much more blatant in their contempt for the rest of us.

CurlewKate · 09/03/2023 17:38

Abusive men collude with abusive men. Who knew?

LakieLady · 09/03/2023 17:56

What's the use of saying we just have to accept it.*

Unfortunately the population believed the media lies about 'dangerous Corbyn' and look where we are. Corbyn out there supporting picket lines and strikes while Tories refuse to support nurses and puts in laws to stop protests and immigration.
