To consider a private prescription for appetite suppressants?

I was listening to someone interviewed on radio 4 who had a trial with one of the new drugs you can inject weekly that help sue press appetite. I’m wondering if having a prescription for that to run alongside going back to a diet club of some kind would help as it might mean I wasn’t always feeling hungry. I usually have a good first 2-3 months but then go off the rails and struggle to get started again. Has anyone ever tried these and if so did they help you stick with it for longer so you could actually lose all the weight you need to? For context I’m clinically obese so want to lose for health vs aesthetic reasons and I’d want to lose 5-6 stone in total. Have successfully lost 2-3 many times but always end up gaining it back and I’m always hungry but not totally convinced it’s real hunger vs some kind of compulsion to eat and definitely I sometimes binge. I just wonder if this would be enough to help get past that hump stage you hit when longer term dieting.

I’m in a similar boat - my worry is the thyroid cancer risk (I have two small children) and that I overeat not because I’m hungry but because of habit/ emotions/ having been on a diet since 11 & all the fat shaming diet rhetoric that came with that

The thyroid cancer has only ever shown in animal studies. So far no human cases have been linked. X

Is this the one that you can't take with thyroid issues? Linked to thyroid tumours or a different one? I think I looked at one but I have a thyroid issue so couldn't take it even if I went ahead with it.
There's lots on the weight loss page about weight loss injections and tracking progress.

If your issues are around binge eating have you thought about trying to tackle the causes and make healthy replacements for that? I'm an emotional eater and definitely want to try and address my mindset about that to lose weight longer term.

No it might be a different one you are thinking of. Plenty of people on Ozempic have thyroid issues x

I've started the tablet form of wegovy (can't remember the proper name) so far I still feel hungry....hopefully less so as the dose increases!

I found it (the tablet) did nothing for me. If you ask your doc to swap to the injection you will be much better off. Once a week, a tiny needle; it’s a cinch! X

No. I’ve been checked at work recently and blood sugars and cholesterol are fine. Blood pressure is fine. I’m not currently having issues but assume that can’t last forever.

I sound like I am selling it here; I am really not; I have just had really good results with thyroid and medication induced weight gain.

I would say, get yourself under a proper Endocrinologist who you see face to face for prescribing and who monitors all your bloods regularly. And take it (privately if you wish) under their guidance, or take their guidance if it’s to do or take something else.

Unfortunately every man and his dog are selling it online now at all sorts of doses so people are just buying it without even being weighed and measured. Some people who want to go on a higher dose of Ozempic quicker are just twisting their orders to get the 1mg pen. It’s risky. If you’re well monitored; then you don’t have to worry about it.
wish you all the best x

What happens when you stop using the injections though? It's not something you have to use for life is it?

You put the weight back on of you revert to your old habits

swearymad · 09/03/2023 20:54

I heard the same programme and ordered Ozempic last night.
I am hoping that it will give me a boost to my weight loss efforts. I am worried about what happens when I stop taking it but I guess that's similar to folk reaching their target weight in a more traditional way.

JudgeRudy · 09/03/2023 20:58

If you're referring to Ozempic it's not quite right to say it's an appetite suppressant. It will suppress the hormones that tell you your stomach is empty (so true hunger) but if you over eat for emotional reasons (let's be clear, you're over eating) then it might not be so successful.

I've known people say they felt full but just couldn't stop and another say they wished they had a hole in their throat so they could scoff and enjoy the taste but not have a full belly (or the calories)! Whilst you may not quite have reached the diagnosed standard an eating disorder, it is all the same disordered eating.
By all means speak to your GP about this drug, you may even get free Slimming World or Weight Watchers classes and subsidised exercise classes however I'd be asking for an appointment with a psychologist and some CBT. Sort your head and your body should follow

summerlovingvibes · 09/03/2023 20:59

Reading with interest because am part way through ordering this myself ... just about to pay. But have gone for the tablet form instead of injections just purely based on cost. However, if tablets less effective then I will stop my order 🤔🤔🤔

Is there anywhere I can get this where they don't check your weight??

My BMI is 26.

You can get almost anything if you go to the right private Dr...including on line.

Bookendsinglass · 09/03/2023 21:32

I’ve been struggling with my slimming club fir the past few months. I’ve lost a few pounds which is better than nothing but it comes at the price of strict discipline and not eating out. A friend started on Ozempic four weeks ago and has lost ten pounds. The difference is she still has a life and socialises, just now she doesn’t overconsume. So now I’ve ordered some.

The only thing is I don’t think it’s fair to go back to the slimming club if I do start losing weight. I don’t think it would be right to pretend I was doing it using the club’s guidance and let people cheer me on for my weigh loss when I’m using something else. But maybe I’m weird and overthinking it.

my husband was warned about his slightly raised blood sugar last year. He started on ozempic today, private prescription.

Some will ask for a picture of you, others a picture of you with the scales reading visible, others also will ask for your GP details.

26 is only very slightly overweight honestly, unless you have other stuff going on affecting your weight/weight loss I really wouldn’t resort to drugs to lose weight.

if you do, go to an actual doctor face to face privately and see if they can prescribe for you or advise anything else.

Some people get absolutely horrendous side effects with Ozempic to the extent that they can’t keep anything down. You don’t want to end up really unwell and not be able to sincerely go to the GP because you lied to get the medication. See the other Ozempic threads for side effects. Some people can’t bear it at all.

just make sure you do the best for your health x

Tablets useless for me but that’s just me. I would go for the injection. There’s a reason so many people go for the injection x

I'm on Saxenda injections. 3 dress sizes down and feeling great in comparison to what I did. Totally suppresses my appetite and helps teach me better behaviours with food even when on a break from it.

Radiodread · 09/03/2023 23:17

My experience with semaglutide/ ozempic has been great. Effortless weight loss, but I am obese and really need to lose it for health reasons. Private script. It's very expensive though, at least £149 per month.

Mother87 · 09/03/2023 23:23

I heard the R4 feature too - and liked the sound of one of the interviewees saying that her "feelings" around food changed... (I eat for emotional reasons, rarely true hunger) but was also put off by the fact that most people regain all the weight once the medication stops, and there was no mention about side-effects afaik?

Sounds very encouraging...how do you obtain the drugs & are you "monitored" in some way? (You don't have to answer if not comfortable doing soBlush)

Just remembered from the Radio 4 interview, an increase in possible gall stones was mentioned -
i've had my gall bladder removed and since had stonea forming (NOT pleasant!) So I wonder if that would rule me out for these drugs

OffToThatPlace · 09/03/2023 23:29

The side effects of Ozempic/Semaglutide are brutal Sad

Radiodread · 09/03/2023 23:36

I get it from Juniper but there are several online pharmacies which offer it too. And they are cheaper so I am switching.

I think the serious side effect profile is actually pretty good. There is a lot of real world data for this class of drug. I looked into it quite intensively as I was worried this was going to be one of those ones that years down the line, we go "if only wed known...". It could still be of course but I was reasonably reassured by what o read.

I found the side effects extremely minimal. Lots of people feel sick or get indigestion. I had a bit of nausea for maybe a couple of days and my bowels have slowed down quite a lot but that's it.i also got quite weird dreams for the first few weeks but only the night after I'd taken my weekly dose. Nothing else at all. Oh, and if I'm doing loads of exercise I have to remember to actually fuel my body as I can feel a bit worn out otherwise.

Would this work for someone who isn't hugely overweight but is just super greedy and loves food? BMI is 26 I think, I genuinely can't stop eating until the food is gone. I happily eat a full domino's medium pizza and can eat a large at a push. I'm not an emotional eater just never feel full? I eat salads for lunch every day but I basically spend my whole life thinking about my next meal.

Sounds like you don't eat enough protein

Radiodread · 09/03/2023 23:56

Personally I wouldn't take it for a BMI of 26. That is almost in the healthy weight bracket and maybe you just actually need the food you are eating.

Effiebreast · 10/03/2023 00:07

I'd be concerned this will be used by people with bulimia or other eating disorders. Already got folk with BMIs of 26 enquiring about it. Next thing teens will be getting hold of it. Much like 20 years olds having botox, people with perfectly normal weight will do anything they can to keep the weight off with no effort. Disaster waiting to happen.

Any responsible provider will check your weight honestly. They will take your GP details, request a photo or a photo of you with scales visible. There are irresponsible providers out there but then you’re going to have to flat out lie to them to obtain the drugs, so you will have no support if things go wrong for you.

26 is barely overweight and you have said yourself you are greedy, which is a behaviour that can be changed. These drugs are hardcore and were developed

a) For people with diabetes
b) for people with other health conditions accompanying weight gain
c) Now licensed for obese people

rather than put drugs into your system i would get some therapy around your own eating and sort it out for life, rather than ‘quick fix’ it with semaglutide.

all the best
