Full disclosure I know this is privileged but it's not a goady post, I know shopping is an emotive subject because who wouldn't want to spend more money on food for their family. So this is not about me complaining or even half pretending ny life is difficult so please don't see it as that .I have been having threads about shopping for months as it's important to me and I've been thinking about making our money work harder that we spend
I am a sahm so o have the time to do the shop that way ( I do it online)

I was not convinced we were saving any money we bought a lot of stuff that wasn't good quality a lot of things mouldy or crushed and the refund process is not like with Ocado
I resent their subs but I had no missing items and one sub which was fine and a good price
The Asda shop I did for crisps etc frozen things branded and some bits that are good from there and I used Asda points card, it was £139 and I used £107 in points so I don't feel upset but I had 14 missing items and 5 substitutes which were nothing close to what I wanted

I did use both apps at the same time and it is a fiddle but I did £230 on Ocado to stock up a bit as I had a voucher for 25% off
It's still been the same cost for our weekly shop at Asda but with a few things that make a difference from Ocado

Has anyone done something like this and do you get used to it? If I did all on Ocado shop would be at least £400 every week

Thank you

I have an Asda delivery every Monday and an Ocado delivery on a Friday. It works for us as DH and a I like our nice Marks and Spencer luxuries over the weekend now that the kids are usually out with their friends and grabbing McDonald's and Nando's while they are out.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/03/2023 11:15

But she's said she wants/needs to cut down, and as she's spending at least twice the national average for a family her size, there's obviously scope to do so. And that's without actually changing what she buys, but how she does it.

Buying everything in one go, once a week, from one shop, for the week ahead is usually an expensive way to shop, which is why the supermarkets have gently encouraged us to do this, because we spend more than we would by shopping around, being flexible and cherry picking according to price/value.

Believeitornot · 09/03/2023 11:16

You could try other supermarkets.

ocado is a rip off for brands. I only use them for convenience eg I need a quick delivery, otherwise I stick with Tesco deliveries for branded stuff and then go in store for fresh bits.

Oh god lay off the OP of that's what she wishes to spend that's up to her. We spend a lot on food, we cook from scratch but spend a lot of fresh stuff, dairy free alternatives for one child etc.

Shop in as many places as you fancy OP. Although, as you've said you're buying lots of fruit have you seen if your local fruit shop does a delivery service? Ours does and the fruit tends to taste better, last longer and come in cheaper as we buy what's in season. Same with the butcher's we get a weekly delivery from there and get some lovely cuts of meat.

The whole point of this thread though is she wants to know if she can shop at asda and ocado to reduce her weekly bill, and is it worth the extra time to save the money.

o/p can spend what she likes, but shopping at asda now and again isn’t going to bring her bill down £200 a week.

if she’s worried about increasing demand on her time by doing multiple shops, there are other ways to save money. Which are probably easier as £400 a week is a lot by most people’s standards.

Murdoch1949 · 09/03/2023 17:15

I use Waitrose for my main weekly shop, Ocado to get M&S stuff once a month, Sainsbury's occasionally (for good bank donations), Asda for household supplies. I just make the Asda order up to £40 with cat food.

OP, you're probably buying the 'naice' versions of everything. So probably worth having a think about whether they're actually worth the extra cost. Sometimes they are, sometimes not.

As for cleaning products, if you're serious about saving money, have a look in Home Bargains or B&M, often a fraction of the price of supermarkets. Also think about whether you need so many cleaning products. If you're one of those people who's forever buying bleach, sprays etc, you're almost certainly buying and using far more than you need.

If you're eligible, Costco could work for you. You have to shop in person, but they can be good for cleaning products, toilet rolls, snack food and fruit, which we don't buy because the quantities are too large, but the quality looks very good.

It's exactly that it's literally my pleasure
I have really disordered eating (I barely eat I'm disgusted very easily and I also want to be very thin) so if find having naice stuff is more appetising. Obviously. It's lucky for me I know that.

We don't need to make the saving but we want to. So working out how to have the best value naice shop is exactly that

You have literally hit the nail on the head

A lot of snack food

Whatever happened to sandwiches and homemade cake?

Someone can do a comparison of the negligible cost of flour/butter/eggs/sugar + fuel against shop bought snacks. But there’s the nutrition element as well …

Because we like them and we are all healthy
Except me who is under weight

@Lastnamedidntstick
We eat all of the fruit
All of it I mean everything

And then the snacks are all gone too, that's things like ham, chicken, chicken on sticks etc, salami, salmon (they eat a lot of smoked salmon salmon poached or trout)
Eggs beans bread Crisps cheese biscuits crackers bread sticks rice cakes yoghurt smoothie fresh juice frozen pizzas garlic and flat breads pittas and wraps

Literally every thing you can think of is in the basket every week and it all gets eaten with the exception of things like maybe some biscuits or a bagel or a muffin
Not heaps of waste at all

During the first lockdown, when delivery slots were scarce, it would have been a bit off to have two supermarkets delivering to you within the same hour/slot. But not any more! Buy what you like and enjoy your shopping!

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 10/03/2023 09:15

Maybe if you do have disordered eating, the savings could be done elsewhere rather than food.

How old are your kids? You’ve said one is a baby on formula, and you don’t eat. £400 a week for 1 adult and two children? Are they a healthy weight? Honestly?

Are you buying all this food because it feeds into your eating disorder, buying, cooking and feeding others is a massive ED red flag.

tbh of the last couple of posts make me think this is about you and your disordered attitude to food. It’s the GP you need to discuss this with, not mumsnet.

stopbeeping · 10/03/2023 10:51

Yes we honestly all are my daughter is honestly 30th centile and the boys 70th -90th my husband is 6ft 3 and approx 16 stone with muscles they are not over weight and I am under weight

Yes but they are also all used to eating like that so that's what we don't I don't want to change it as it works for us. We mostly snack in this house not large meals this is why food is easy access and expensive I don't want to change it I always get asked on here it's not what I was asking

I want to know if anyone has the knack to use two apps to shop each week or if it becomes exhausting.

Literally that

Not if i need a GP

I am aware of my issue however it won't kill me, I am not that thin and wouldn't be due to vanity. I am not going to die from this. I don't binge, I just eat small on a basic break even i imagine but I don't even calorie count or control portions I just don't have An Appetite I feel repulsed as in dirty animals for ham etc
I do not impact anyone with my food and I do not have low energy I am cold though but I believe that it just genetic
I don't know why I want to justify myself but I feel hurt by literal strangers with no face when I'm asking a practical question
You (not you personally you all) don't know me intimately and it feels awful that this what you would say. I wonder if you would say this to me if I asked you when you came to my home for a cup of coffee in the week? Think about it

I want to know if anyone has the knack to use two apps to shop each week or if it becomes exhausting

well then the simple answer is no, using two apps for a few minutes each per week is not “exhausting” 🙄. How can it be?

don’t you use other apps to shop like amazon? Most of us use multiple apps to buy stuff each week, without falling down with exhaustion.

I have really disordered eating (I barely eat I'm disgusted very easily and I also want to be very thin)

yet your eating isn’t a problem, it’s genetic?

as to saying all this over a coffee. Yes I would. It would likely be the last coffee though as I know how resistant and in denial those with ED’s can be, and how triggering and consuming it can be for those nearby. I can’t help, so I’d tell you to get help and if it ended a friendship then at least I’ve done the right thing.

and 16 st for a 6’3 man is overweight.

Well it would be the last coffee I had with you too because you sound pretty harsh
I didn't say my eating was genetic. I meant being cold. But I am sorry if my problems are triggering for you, I try to mask them as much as possible so nobody else suffers.

My husband is not over weight, but thanks for using a BMI checker to creep on him. It's not applicable for people with or without a lot of muscle, example me at 45 kg I don't look like someone else might, because I'm 5ft and I have no muscles

Anyway best of luck to you, I prefer to be a soft touch

And yes I use Amazon, I think you're being facetious
