AIBU to not give a shit about my job?

I have always been a high achiever and work in a professional career with security, good pay, high responsibility and endless scope for progression. I get lots of opportunities to develop myself as a leader etc etc.

It’s a job most people consider to be worthwhile and important BUT I just don’t care. I want to do the bare minimum and then log off. I feel like I’m constantly pretending to care about my personal goals, what I want to achieve etc. Everyone else is so keen and thinks the work is so important.

Am I the only one pretending or do other people do this?

Is this a recent thing? Perhaps you’re a bit burnt out?

OnlyFannys · 08/03/2023 19:40

Similar situation, I couldn't care less either. If I won the lottery tomorrow you wouldnt see me for dust but I do think I'm a bit burnt out

secretllama · 08/03/2023 19:41

YANBU. I couldn't care less, I'm only there for money to live.

Sluj · 08/03/2023 19:41

I'm the same but it's only since lockdown and more wfh. All motivation is gone

Dominoeffecter · 08/03/2023 19:42

I’m with you on this especially the personal goal thing, I’m convinced everyone else is faking enthusiasm

Slimjimtobe · 08/03/2023 19:44

I think it is totally normal

most people in my job are burnt out and passing themselves and pretending to stay in the job

Flymetothetoon · 08/03/2023 19:44

This was me in my career in the civil service - surrounded by people clawing each other's eyes out to get higher up the greasy pole whilst I had no fucks to give. Don't get me wrong I was great at my job but had zero interest in 'development' and going further up the ranks. Now retired and loving it 😍

IwishIwasSupermum · 08/03/2023 19:45

I couldn’t care less either, I quietly quit ages ago, money is good though, have upped my pension contribution and hope to quit altogether in 18 mths to do something entirely different part time. Secretly hoping I get made redundant before the 18 mths but looking doubtful.

flowertoday · 08/03/2023 19:45

I feel that as I get older ( not sure about wiser) I have become increasingly aware that work is not everything. Being a human being is about more than always doing more, working harder etc.

Also it depends on what the impact is of going the extra mile. Sometimes it's worth it , often not sadly.

I may also be a bit burnt out tbh.

percypal · 08/03/2023 19:45

Same

EarringsandLipstick · 08/03/2023 19:46

Well, I doubt you are the only one.

But I feel life is too short - work takes up a lot of time & while it doesn't have to be huge I think it's worth making it personally satisfying on some level.

If your current role isn't doing that, time to look for another role, area, or profession.

Moxysright · 08/03/2023 19:46

YANBU I feel like this in my job.

sosickofthisshit · 08/03/2023 19:47

I'm the same. Couldn't give a shit. I'm only there because I have bills to pay. I'm a lottery win away from hightailing it the fuck out of there and never working another day in my life.

DrManhattan · 08/03/2023 19:48

Can do my job in 20% of the time I am paid for. Feel like I'm winning at life

Bumble84 · 08/03/2023 19:49

I’m the same. I’m professional and do it to the best of my ability when I’m there but as soon as I walk out I’m also mentally out. I have no ambition to climb the corporate ladder. I have enough money to live well (for me) I actually feel a bit sorry for people who get stressed out about work, it must make life really quite miserable.

Buythedammshoes · 08/03/2023 19:50

Being doing my job for nearly 30years .. I’m well paid, can do the job with my eyes shut but I seriously have no fucks left to give !

ImAvingOops · 08/03/2023 19:51

I think there's a tendency for employers to believe there's something wrong with an employee if they are not constantly on a quest for personal/professional development. But there's nothing wrong in people being happy to just do their existing job well, and not care about climbing the greasy pole. It's not a character defect to not want to constantly go on courses or work extra time in order to get promoted!

Some people love their work, want to progress etc and that's great for them. But its equally okay to just want to do your job and go home and focus more on your life outside of work.

Same.

I genuinely couldn't give a fuck about work. I've no interest in progressing, I can live nicely off my wage, I log in at 9am and off at 5pm on the dot. I dont care about wider targets, the company doing well/better. I do he minimum of what's required of me and nothing more , if anything I treat work like a mini social with a bit of admin to do.

If I won the lottery tonight I'd resign tomorrow morning with immediate effect.

Work is for one thing, to give me a wage at the end of the month and be simple and easy. Fuck anything, and everything else. 🤣

Charliescat · 08/03/2023 19:54

I have no interest in my job at all I do what needs to be done and log off . A former colleague ran about like an idiot for years working late etc not one of the people she put herself out for marked her retiral or even speaks about her now . The worst thing is when you have new enthusiastic graduates start and have to fake some level of interest when you can do the job with your eyes closed and no effort .

icanneverthinkofnc · 08/03/2023 19:56

Poorly paid, not a high achieving career. If I won the lottery, I'd be gone like a shot.
I tried building the career, gave my all, went above and beyond to try to prove myself, eventually got into junior management, and came across the biggest bunch of arseholes who were 'successful' above me.
I now do a good job but do no more than my job description, do my hours, start and leave on the dot. I'm a darned sight happier for it!

Bettyboop3 · 08/03/2023 19:59

Reading these posts makes me realise how very lucky i am. I love my job! I have genuine enthusiasm & care very much. I do feel for people that dread going to work. Life's too short.

Siameasy · 08/03/2023 19:59

I’m there for the money and social aspect. Shoot me.

cansu · 08/03/2023 20:00

I think it is fine to not want to progress and it is also worth remembering that if you were to leave tomorrow, most organisations move on very quickly. I work very hard and spend more time on work than is healthy. I am starting to grasp that I need to prioritise other areas in my life. I have seen countless colleagues make themselves ill in the job.

BigWheels · 08/03/2023 20:01

When I was a kid I always struggled to answer when people askes what I wanted to do when I was older. I never had any career ambitions and I only work because I have to. My job has good condtions and is very close to home but I can think of one thousand things I would rather be doing. Ive potentially got another 40 years of working life ahead of me which is just unimaginable.

whiteroseredrose · 08/03/2023 20:02

YANBU.

I've had career jobs and basic jobs. Not bothered about any of them.
