car issues with Audi

Post more for traffic than AIBU but would appreciate others thoughts as I'm really not savy when it comes to cars.

Background is I took my car to Audi for it's annual service and asked them to look at the MMI system as the display screen was fuzzy. The sat nav and radio were otherwise functioning but the display screen fuzzed every once in a while.

They came back and said the issue was due to their being coins in the CD player (kids 😞). However, when I got the car back the radio and sat nav were no longer working and the CD player fan seemed to be running constantly.

Fast forward a week or so later and my car battery was flat. I assumed I'd left the side lights on but again yesterday my battery was completely dead. I took it back to Audi and they have confirmed the MMI system is draining the battery and suggest I get it replaced for 3K!

I said I can't afford that and asked if they could just disconnect the MMI and would therefore, not drain the battery (after all it's just a sat nav and radio surely)? Anyway they haven't got back to me yet and was just wondering if folks have had a similar experience with car MMI's? Am I right in assuming you don't need it to work for your car to function? It's stressing me out as the car is barely worth 3K, so why would I spend 3K for a radio? I equally can't be jump starting my car every few days.

This started happening after Audi had serviced it and look at the MMI?

I'd be talking to the manager of the the workshop and telling them to get it sorted (FOC) as they've caused the power drainage issue.

Agreeable I'm worried they can fall back on the 'it's the coins in the cd player that has caused the issue. Which is a fair point I suppose.

Too bloody true, it sounds possible that it could be a short to Earth, which will power something without you knowing and kill the battery. It's probably worth getting a car electrician out and then presenting the garage with the bill.

@lubileejubilee

Just wondering if you ever got this sorted? We had to pay to replace the screen as ours got stuck, and it cost the best of £3K, but less than a week later it’s broken again. They have no idea why but say we need to pay another £700 for them to relook at it!! Apparently we can’t reset sensors without the screen so we have no choice, but am so stressed about it!
