£52 to put together a chest of drawers - ripped of or reasonable?

chest of drawers from Argos - 5 drawers. Had for 3 months, husband said will take him 3/4 hours to put together and doesn’t have time. I hired a professional to put together and he did in 2 hours and charged me £52. Is this reasonable? I feel worried as DH will be home soon and will say I’ve been a mug as the chest of drawers only cost us £85.

Imagining how a thread would go down like this:

"Is £26 per hour too much to pay for a cleaner. My wife says she's too busy to clean, and hasn't cleaned for months, so i thought I'd pay for a cleaner."

The man would have his arse handed to him for his misogyny at not even considering the possibility that he could do the cleaning.

You shd be furious with DH. He s had 3 months to turn a flat pack that was in the way into a useful chest of drawers. His lack of action forced you to spend £52 to get some use out of the £85 spent 3 months aho. Stand your ground! You needed drawers. £85 spent and no drawers. £137 spent, and you have drawers. Fill them up!

Let's not go making up things I didn't say.

That wasn't a direct quote - it's what I believed I understood from your comment.

You don't believe that OP should be expected to give her medical circumstances and neither do I; I just said that she could if she so wished.

I know very well what 'so you think' means. You don't actually get to decide what I think. I mean you can guess all you want but don't present it to me as fact

Is that how much people pay for this service? I might need DH to have this as a side job. He's a dab hand at flat-pack 🤣

I'm a dab hand at flat pack furniture too - think I might start hiring myself out, at that rate!

There was a question mark at the end of the sentence - that means it's a question, not a fact. 'So you think?' is a commonly-used shortening of 'So DO you think?' - very clearly a question - and actively invites the person being asked for their own response, to confirm, deny or otherwise comment on.

Of course I don't get to decide what you think, just the same as you don't get to decide what another poster does or doesn't decide to share. If you didn't intend to state this when disagreeing with me in my opinion that OP could have shared if she were disabled, shared if she were disabled and given specifics or otherwise just stated that she couldn't do it herself, whatever did you mean?

As it happens, OP didn't say a single word as to that (let alone why) she couldn't/wouldn't do it herself, when making it clear that she considered it exclusively her husband's (or just A man's? We don't know) job; so of course people are going to respond to such a vague blamey proclamation by asking for at least the tiniest bit of context.

So I single handedly tried to put together a large chest of 8 drawers in summer. It took me 8 hours and I was full of bruises, cuts and aches after. DP got home and finished it off cause the rest of it was a 2 person job. Looking back I definitely would have been better off paying for it to be assembled. I spent a whole day off work trying to sort it.

There’s no flat pack in the world that takes 3 or 4 hours to put together

Wrong.IKEA brimnes day bed with trundle and storage. That was not a fun afternoon.

smashin · 08/03/2023 21:41

Add ikea Hemnes 8 drawer to the list too😅 even YouTube tutorials state it took them several hours!

FrangipaniBlue · 08/03/2023 21:41

@GoodChat 😂😂

Zanatdy · 08/03/2023 21:45

I’ve just put together 2 beds, 2 chest of drawers and a hallway table. Once you get going it’s not that difficult. 3/4 seems excessive, mine took 2hrs max.
I wouldn’t pay for it to be done, I’d just do it myself, you don’t need any particular skills to build flatpack

You are going to quite extreme but somewhat boring lengths to argue with me. I'm out.

toomuchfaff · 08/03/2023 22:47

if he gets really angry, simply remind him he could have put it together in the days and days it's been sat there.. sorted now

I was thinking exactly the same about you, so no complaints from me there!
