What would you pay for a similar set up for a kid's birthday party?

Hey

Posting on AIBU for traffic.

Was wondering what you would be willing to pay for a birthday set-up like the one in the photos shown.

I'd like to start something on the side alongside my current job to earn a bit of extra cash. I'm intrigued to find out what you'd be willing to pay, please be kind. This wasn't a professional set-up. It was just for my nephew and a few close friends and family have said I should explore this option as money has been tight recently. Is there still a demand for these things?

And sorry I cant comment on how much I would pay as I certainly wouldnt pay for that for a kids party, I like to fill bellys and it seems like there is no food there 😂

redskylight · 07/03/2023 17:20

I think that's way OTT for a children's birthday party, sorry.
What happened to jelly and ice cream? :)

I guess you will need to research your potential market carefully (i.e. are there enough people who will pay to make it worth your while?). You also run the risk of this being a new exciting thing the first once or twice, but people will be less interested in it once it's been at a few parties.

daimtheman · 07/03/2023 17:25

Honestly, it's all a bit style over substance for a kids party.

Bimblybomeyelash · 07/03/2023 17:25

I think kids are just happy with party rings and wotsits, so I’d never pay for someone else to do party food. The venue/entertainment can be bloody expensive, so I don’t want to pay much more for the party food! Plenty of people like to buy birthday cakes though so that’s worth exploring. And round here we have lots of hen dos who would pay for fancy party food.

gogohmm · 07/03/2023 17:28

I would for a teen party. Not for little ones

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 07/03/2023 17:30

As everyone has said- Hen parties, baby showers, christenings, first birthdays. They're gorgeous and instagrammable- it's for adults not kids. It pains me based on work I've put in but the older they get they're like locusts, you just lash out haribo and squeezy juice drinks and they grab. ideally stuff wrapped so you don't get filthy little hands everywhere.

BaronessBomburst · 07/03/2023 17:33

Your food and presentation look lovely. I agree with another poster who said that baby showers, family parties, or hen nights etc might be better. Most children don't care; they just want crisps and balloons.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 07/03/2023 17:36

It looks very unhealthy. Where are the vegetables and actual food?

Edithisoverthere · 07/03/2023 17:37

I think it all looks gorgeous! Agree not for kids alone, but I would love lots of that for a family birthday celebration, grown up kids and grandchildren, at home. I pay £60-80 ish for a vegetarian cake usually, but would love to get lots of other bits too.

cocksstrideintheevening · 07/03/2023 17:37

I any shower, hen nights might be more
Your target market. I wouldn't want that set up for a kids party. They have more fun with a load of balloons in a hall and party rings / sandwich / haribo.

If you let a load a load of 5 year olds on a set up like that it would be trashed in minutes

You don't need vegetables at a party!

It's a party. Other than a few cucumber and carrot sticks, for the parents to put in the child's plate and for said child to nibble on and leave, then I'm not sure too much veg is necessary tbh.
I've done the whole party veg and dips, bith for dd and for numerous parties at school, - compared to everything else it mostly gets left ime.

Your kids must love you 😂

Blackmetalmama · 07/03/2023 17:50

It all looks lovely, I think adding baloons would increase what you could charge and also cut some costs as a baloon arch is not expensive to set up unlike baking a load of different cakes/sweet treats.

whatadayforadaydream · 07/03/2023 17:53

I think the first lot are quite good and you would find a market in the people who care about instagram pictures.

I wouldn't bother with fancy cakes like that for a kid's party. They like junk generally. Certainly I wouldn't serve them anhting in small glasses.

Overthebow · 07/03/2023 17:54

I wouldn’t pay for that for a kids party. Most is too fancy for what kids want and the rest is just stuff I can do myself easily (sweets in a paper cup).

your treats and cakes however look great and I would pay for them for a family party or an evening do. I’d usually spend £100 or so on nice desserts/treats for that sort of thing depending on numbers. I’d concentrate on that.

ActDottie · 07/03/2023 17:57

The football cake isn’t quite there yet, but the other treats I think are good enough to sell.

I just paid £70 for a birthday cake for my friend as a ball park figure on what people will pay for a professionally done cake.

WoolyMammoth55 · 07/03/2023 17:59

Hi OP, just to echo what others have said: I think you are very good at food styling and that your pics look great but in my experience (5 yo and 2yo) I wouldn't use you for a kids party.

For a baby shower, hen night, anniversry party or WEDDING I think you'd be able to make good money - basically any time the people eating will be adults not grabby sticky little monsters children!

Wish you the best of luck.

GrisleyR · 07/03/2023 18:00

I would target the hen party/baby shower/ girly get together market.

We have a shop near us that just does cakes, shakes and sweet stuff and make a huge success with teen sleepover parties!

OnlyFannys · 07/03/2023 18:04

As others have said it does look lovely and very well presented but I dont think your market is quite right unless you have a very affluent client base for kids parties. If you could taper your approach to baby showers, engagement parties etc I think you could do quite well. Your cupcakes look lush

BelindaBears · 07/03/2023 18:06

It looks lovely but my child is 5 and it would be totally wasted on her so it’s not something I’d pay for. Perhaps try some set ups that would appeal more to tween girls?

ChildcareIsBroken · 07/03/2023 18:07

user0786 · 07/03/2023 16:58

Thanks for the honesty/constructive feedback.

These are some of the cakes/treats I’ve made. What would you be willing to pay for these?

I'd pay for these.

Bigmirrorssmallrooms · 07/03/2023 18:11

Wow the stuff looks fab.

on the first I’d want some savoury as well if I was going to cater. I’d definitely consider buying the secon set of cakes, but unlikely for a kids birthday party. I see them as more grown up. In that instance I’d buy a box or two and set up myself

worried4698643 · 07/03/2023 18:12

What are you actually selling with the first pictures?

Are you providing the food and decorations?
Or just the set up and parents supply the food.

The presentation is lovely. But honestly nothing that parents wouldn't just order themselves from Amazon.

The sweet treats in other pics however are lovely.

mondaytosunday · 07/03/2023 18:14

Not for kids! But for a corporate thing or adult aged thing (like bridal shower).
