To want to keep my work calendar private?

We use Microsoft Outlook at work, and by default we all have a calendars private where people can see when we have meetings/when we're busy, but not the same of the meetings.

We have a new project lead and she wants us to change the settings on our calendars so we she can see what meetings we have, so that when she is trying to put in meetings and is trying to find a slot that works for everyone she can see what meetings people can move/what are just placeholders or meetings that move.

However, in my calendar I've had regular meetings with HR and occupational health and whilst the names of the meetings don't delve into the nitty gritties of what has been discussed I'd rather not let colleagues see that I have these meetings.

WIBU to say I want to keep my calendar private?

I think YABU I'm afraid. Mark those HR etc meetings private but colleagues should be able to see what you are up to as meetings can be very challenging to set so you need to see what else the person is up to as you can often overbook a regular one to one for example.

We have our calendars set as open by default. We are there to work, and to work together as a team. It's productive to be able to see what someone is working on/what meeting they have/etc. As everyone says, you can set individual meetings as private whether you are the sender or receiver of the meeting invitation.

I'm another who agrees she is asking from a reasonable business point of view. You'll just need to mark your occ health etc as private - I consider anything marked private as a non moveable but am able to gauge whether other things are moveable and it's a massive help.

Yes, mine is open to those who need to see (so immediate colleagues) what I am doing and then others can just see if I am busy or free. I mark private/personal appointments as private, as does everyone else.

RedCarsGoFaster · 07/03/2023 16:12

No it's not UR for them to ask you all to share your calendars. I simply put my personal appointments on there under a private setting.

Very normal. Just make anything private that is so.

So when your line manager schedules meetings which clash with your HR/OH meetings, what are you going to do? Come back here & moan that you're not allowed to attend meetings necessary for your health?

Do you know how difficult it is to schedule meetings for a team?

The only options in the calendar are private (default) or public which everyone in the company can see. I didn't realise you can make individual meetings private, I'll do that.

I don't use my work calendar for personal things, just work-related things (i've been having some health issues lately so have had meetings with HR and occupational health)

Just change those specific HR meetings to private? It’s normal practice to have open shared calendars with team members/managers

Yabu. Set specific appointments to private.
