Will panelling eventually look tacky?

I say this as someone who added panelling to my house, in my defence my house is from the 1800s and has the original decorative ceiling mouldings.

Will this become the new grey?

Yes! More so in a new build than a 200 yo house though

RiverRock22 · 06/03/2023 20:49

I think it will become dated in the not to distant future.

It is very marmite, each to their own but to be honest it's really not for me. All I think of when I see it is the total dust trap.

MrsBunnyEars · 06/03/2023 20:50

I think it will be fine if you’ve effectively restored the original.

Naff as fuck in a new build though!

Chihuahuasrule · 06/03/2023 20:51

Yes it already looks tacky - unless in a period house

footstoop · 06/03/2023 21:01

no if it's where it should below i.e a period house.

footstoop · 06/03/2023 21:01

be!

Chocadore · 06/03/2023 21:04

What do you mean eventually? It's fine in older buildings but in ubiquitous new builds looks awful (IMO!!!!)

I agree.

Dotcheck · 06/03/2023 21:05

I disagree that you can’t have it in a new build. It’s your house, you’re spending a majority of your wage on it, you should do what you like.

Just panel with screws rather than gluing - you can then remove it. There is also some wooden panelling wallpaper which is removable

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 06/03/2023 21:05

If it's the original stuff it's fine - otherwise I think it already looks a bit weird.

zorgoid · 06/03/2023 21:06

Really sorry but it already looks naff

JMSA · 06/03/2023 21:06

I love it in a period house.

You can have it in new build. It just looks really naff

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 06/03/2023 21:09

Everything is naff/will date/is bland. Have what you love.

echt · 06/03/2023 21:10

I had to look this up. I didn't know it was a thing.

I agree that faux-earlier century look in a new build looks odd. A bit like those videotape covers that look like books.

SquashPenguin · 06/03/2023 21:11

Looks shit in a new build. Looks lovely in a period property.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 06/03/2023 21:13

I think real panelling can look great, even in a new build. But most of the 'panelling' you see on facebook and insta is just mdf batons glued on to the walls. No actual panels.

Zcity · 06/03/2023 21:14

I love it, in any building! I don't think it looks naff in a new build at all.

I don't have any but I'd like to! Another project...

AddieLoggins2 · 06/03/2023 21:18

If it's done well I love it and think it looks really nice, regardless of the age of the property

But I do think in newer homes (ie where it's not a period feature) it will be a fad and will look dated very quickly, and will be a bugger to make good again once removed. Which really puts me off having it in my house.

Igniteyourbones · 06/03/2023 21:25

All home designs look dated after 5/10 years, as different looks go in and out of fashion. Decorate your house however makes you happy. Change in 5/10 years when it dates or you don’t like it anymore. It’s what people have been doing in their homes for centuries.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 06/03/2023 21:29

I think a bare staircase usually looks better with a bit of panelling on the wall side. Especially if it's a narrow staircase with no turn in it.

Flamingogirl08 · 06/03/2023 21:32

Well everything looks dated after a while so just have whatever you like

redspottedmug · 06/03/2023 22:01

I haven't seen it in real life but would imagine it looks tacky unless exceptionally well done.

Anyway what do I know - I have the Anaglypta panel wallpaper in my bedroom and I do like it.
But easy enough to strip off when I get bored of it.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/03/2023 22:17

What do you mean by panelling? I only ask because I have tongue and groove in my family bathroom and am seriously thinking of putting it in my hall as well. I have a 1990s house. What is the Mumsnet opinion on that? I would have white tongue and groove, quite high, with fabulous wallpaper above. Naff? Nice? (I probably won't pay any attention but still want to know...)

Hallelujah.

A sensible response.

Why all the snobbery about fashion on here.

Fashion is what it is. People following the flock.

Be brave and "have what you love".
