Hi everyone

I'm going to drive him to vets first thing tomorrow to get it looked at but wondered if any of you could help with any suggestions for tonight?

For the past 2 weeks, my dog has been itching and biting his skin. Especially around his testicles.

We had something similar to this before and we changed his food, had some bits from the vets and I've been using salmon oil in his food.

I thought it was the same thing but he went to the groomers today, she knows him well and doesn't use anything scented on him but when I picked him up she said that I should probably keep an eye on his skin because it's quite sore.

Tonight, it seems so much worse, it's red raw and he is growling every time I try and look at it.

Is there anything I can give him or put on it that I may have in the house?? Thanks in advance x

Forgot to mention that he hasn't got fleas and is up to date with all worming and vaccinations x

Sudocrem. If it's environmental, try gently cleaning the area with cotton wool and a gentle saline then pat dry and put sudocrem on.

Oatmeal bath

elm26 · 06/03/2023 20:03

@Pollywoddles he had an oatmeal bath last week and then groomers today so I don't want to do it again in case it makes it more sore x

Is that a 'hot spot'? Looks like my fella did when he suffered from them, the best treatment was to clipper the fur back to an area that is clear and some sudocreme.

TheBlahWitchProject · 06/03/2023 20:06

I believe you can give dogs Piriton. Hope it gods sorted soon, poor little guy 🐶

ToBeOrNotToBee · 06/03/2023 20:09

It's a hotspot

elm26 · 06/03/2023 20:09

My Nan used to give one of our dogs Piriton for skin condition due to allergy but I'd be worried about the dosage although I could Google, thanks x

If you can stop him from licking it too that might help

Mumteedum · 06/03/2023 20:10

How often is he getting bathed? Seems to be a modern obsession going to groomers. It used it be regarded as a bad Idea to regularly shampoo dogs fur as it gets rid of natural oils. But maybe that's out of date, I dunno.

Poor dog. Looks awful sore. My old boy had sore skin and hibiscrub sorted it.

JudyLemon · 06/03/2023 20:13

Looks like a hot spot to me! My shih tzu sometimes gets them when her hair gets long. She gets it shaved back and it is gone in a week.

elm26 · 06/03/2023 20:13

@bloodywhitecat @ToBeOrNotToBee I've just googled hot spot and sounds exactly like it. Going to clean it with cool boiled water and put a tshirt on his bottom half tonight before we go to vets thank you x

@Mumteedum he goes to groomer every 4 months or so and has a bath at home probably twice a year, I'm lucky he's not a smelly dog but he does love the mud so sometimes it's necessary. Thank you x

I had a border terrier who weighed 10kg and he could have upto 4 piriton a day

SirVixofVixHall · 06/03/2023 20:15

Yes hot spots. My old dog was prone to them, he would get itchy, bite at his skin, and then get the hot spot.
They are sore, I hope your dog is better soon.

HashBrownandBeans · 06/03/2023 20:15

Hibiscrub is what the vets prescribe to wash a hot spot. You can buy in any pharmacy

Bunnyishotandcross · 06/03/2023 20:19

Def not a vet and not suggesting ddog is left to suffer..
But imo no need for your purse to either..
Out husky had antibiotics 2 years ago for hot spots...
Then we tried green tea. Worked wonders. Even vet was pleased and no pills needed...

Has he been castrated? My Border Collie developed something that looked very similar to this; all his hair started to come away from the sore spots, too. It turned out to be a hormone imbalance, and a course of tablets sorted him out very quickly - although we had to avoid other male dogs for a while as he became VERY attractive to them!

Hope he gets on ok at the vet.

SparePantsAndLego · 06/03/2023 20:27

I’d put an inflatable collar/cone on him if you’ve got one. Give it a wash with some Hibuscrub on cotton wool. Then dry it and put some Sudocrem on it.

Cherrysoup · 06/03/2023 22:23

Hot spot. Treat with athlete’s foot powder, shave surrounding area to remove hair that might get caught up in sticky spots. Whilst I usually always advocate vets, my dog had about 12 pop up one day-I think it was caused by an environmental impact of goodness knows what in a new area. Spots were gone in 3 days.

bamboonights · 06/03/2023 22:30

Another bore for a hotspot too. My dog has just had one - they can be very sore and she wouldn't let me near it to cut away the fur and let air get to it or clean it. She's not aggressive just wouldn't sit still and kept lifting the leg/paw I use Hibiscrub 1:20 (1 part Hibiscrub to 20 parts water) and had to put it on a syringe and squirt it into the wound when she wasn't looking. Kept on with that twice a day and it was healed within a week. Also had to keep her dry. Hard in the winter.
