To elope under these circumstances?

Pondering elopement, just don’t want to regret it.

DP doesn’t have much in the way of family. His parents are not together and live in another country, they had him as teenagers. No cousins and no siblings. He has his lovely grandparents who are in their 70s and we see them often and get on extremely well - thankfully.

Unfortunately my only DSis is manipulative and has bullied me for most my life and makes her contempt for DP very clear. On my side it leaves my parents, a couple of aunts and uncles and cousins.

We probably have 3 friends each that we like enough to invite as well as their plus ones/kids.

It’s a really small handful of people, probably at a push 25 in total. Feels really embarrassing!

Around me it seems eloping is just not a thing people do, especially not people our age (20s). I don’t want to regret not having the standard wedding day and pictures to go along with it. You only get one wedding day hopefully! but on the other hand I can’t imagine shelling out so much money on one day. The cost makes me shudder. We’ve been toying with the idea of marrying really cheaply at the local registry office then going to stay somewhere nice in the UK, followed by a honeymoon possibly abroad.

DPs only reservation is that neither his uncle or mum ever married so his lovely grandma possibly won’t get the opportunity to go to a proper family wedding if not ours

Would love to hear stories of people doing similar.

YABU - you would regret it forever

YANBU - sensible

Elope if you (and your partner) want to but don't feel you can't have a small wedding

We had 20 odd in the end and also considered just immediate families (11). It was absolutely lovely - none of the stress of a big "do" but your closest loved ones supporting you

Small registers office wedding, for you both, the grandparents and your parents . Swanky meal out afterwards . Bliss .

Forc all the people who eloped... did you still have to give notice to marry? And have an interview?

Married in Vegas, we registered our intention to marry the day after we arrived and then walked over to the chapel to book the wedding for a couple of days later.

Of course. The rules on marriage apply to all sizes of wedding.

Could you have a quick register office wedding, maybe with his grandparents as witnesses then a wedding party for all the rest to attend.

Brightshinylight · 06/03/2023 22:51

i know of a couple, who did not elope so much, as turn up at a registry office in jeans & tshirt to sign the papers. Purely a paperwork exercise.

they then hired a big chalet & had a weekend away with close friends & relatives to celebrate.

Although I don't find the idea of having a small wedding with 25 people embarrassing, if that's how you feel, then eloping seems a good option for you. However, in your shoes, I would invite my own DPs and DP's DGP's, so just 6 of you and go for a lovely meal together after the ceremony.

We got married in New York. So easy to do.

MsMcGonagall · 07/03/2023 07:22

most registry offices are quite small, say max. 30 people. So your 25 people would be perfectly formed. Just need to work out if DSis is invited or not!

Nimbostratus100 · 07/03/2023 07:25

why not just his gran and your parents at the registry office - lovely restaurant meal together, the 5 of you, then off on honeymoon?

PartyWhere · 07/03/2023 07:27

If you already feel guilt about not inviting DP's GP's then eloping is probably not the answer for you. Why couldn't you invite your DP's and his GP's? Maybe also a best friend each.

springismything · 07/03/2023 17:03

@Nimbostratus100 that’s a really nice idea

We eloped, best decision ever. Was all about us, so romantic and our photographer was amazing. We are not a posy couple but she made the photos look like we were!

QforCucumber · 07/03/2023 21:41

@Sugaspunsista we did it in vegas so no notice needed just a marriage license 24 hours before the ceremony from city hall.

@Bunchymcbunchface @Skiphopbump we too did Vegas - best decision we ever made. Meal in the stratosphere afterwards was absolutely fantastic!

This.

Lovely suggestion.

They could be your witnesses.

Invite them for lunch, surprise them with the wedding.

Done and dusted.
