ill, boss not replying to email

Should I send a follow up? A text?

Pretty crap but we normally wfh, today was going to be an in person meeting then dinner. Me, my boss and then some junior collegues.

Boss mainly set it up as she wanted people to meet in person, and I was going to go through a project I'd been doing as the main event, so feel really guilty. Not sure if she has too much to specifically discuss.

I have raging tonsillitis which is so bad it's making me gag and can barely speak. Going in is impossible. Emailed at 7am, no reply from boss. Meeting is at 10:30 and have real anxiety there's going to be an awkward 10 mins where people think I just haven't shown up.

Should I chase up boss? She has previously mentioned how she can't keep up with email, so not sure if she's not replying to save time, or becasue she hasn't seen it. I do normally always get a reply from her.

My boss expects me to email/text if unwell. Never had any issues with this method but I always check my message has been responded to by lunchtime, otherwise if no reply I would call to make sure my work was covered.

People sure have weird attitudes around sickness in this thread. 🙄

Cocobutt · 06/03/2023 12:51

I have to ring a specific person that deals with absences and not my boss.
But I’ll always privately text my boss too and also put it on the group chat just to let them know.

If your boss isn’t good at checking emails then I would have followed it up with a quick text to say you’ve sent her an email because you won’t be in today.

GiltEdges · 06/03/2023 10:21

Well, it just looks like you didn't want to go in for the presentation 🤷‍♀️

But either way, is email honestly the only medium you have to communicate in your company, despite the fact people are mostly WFH? I find that unusual. Even if phoning isn't the norm, most companies have other comms options e.g. Teams to help people keep in touch

How the actual can you read the OP and come to that conclusion? You must be being deliberately provocative.

Why don't you try having tonsillitis before you say stupid things like that.

Glad you got a reply and rest assured that your boss has received it.

In future would you be able to compose an email and go into more options and select request read receipt before sending? Then the person reading the email doesn’t have to reply in order to let you know that they have read it.

Not the point of this thread, but I never send read receipts in Outlook!

Mialouu · 06/03/2023 13:07

I'd never give myself anxiety, when I could just pick the phone up.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/03/2023 13:17

Just phone. 'Raging tonsillitis' doesn't make you incapable of speech.

The OP says 'it's making me gag and can barely speak.' Hmm
But I see we have the Monty Python Black Knight contingent in.
You should just hope that you never get a bad case of tonsillitis.

I'm glad your boss has replied - FWIW, every where I work has been the same as your set up and I've never 'called in' sick in my life or had any of my employees call in sick. I think in the circumstances, I would have dropped a text too. Feel better soon!

Same here, never called. I don't know what is so strange about that.
I have always emailed, or sent a whatsapp / text from phone. If I could log in, via chat etc. I used to call many years ago, no one seems to do it where I work now (large org). We are trusted and left to our own devices.

nwatty · 06/03/2023 13:28

I've never had a job where email was an accepted form of calling in sick.

blephly · 06/03/2023 10:32

This isn't what is happening, and yes, I felt terrible yesterday but was ready to power through.

Got up at 6, tried to shower, accepted it wasn't possible and emailed by 7.

You were ready to power through meaning you were prepared to expose others to your infection? No wonder we're still in a raging bloody pandemic!

STAY HOME if sick!

No one wants your festering germs.

ClaireEclair · 06/03/2023 13:31

I would phone and croak down the phone. She will hear how bad you sound. You poor thing. Tonsillitis is awful! I’ve had it a couple of times and was so poorly. Get well soon!

Hellybelly84 · 06/03/2023 13:33

Ive worked in a few industries (all totally different) and would never take a day off sick without calling. You must have a bad throat so i’d be happy calling in and showing how ill I was. I’d call you boss rather than sitting worrying.

Shinyandnew1 · 06/03/2023 13:41

I’ve had repeated bouts of severe tonsillitis resulting in my tonsils being removed as an adult. I still would have rather made a 30 second phone call rather than worrying and having ‘real anxiety’ for 3 hours like the OP said she did! This could have been easily resolved without her having to panic.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/03/2023 13:41

@MarkWithaC

I have had recurrent tonsillitis for over 40 years. It has never rendered me 'speechless'. or not able to send a text.

So please F off.

You are not the OP. Perhaps her experience is not exactly the same as yours? Can you imagine that?
And she/I didn't say 'speechless', so give over putting it in quotes.
Oh, and she's said a few times, but perhaps you've failed to comprehend, that email not text is the usual and accepted way of communicating in her company.

I can email in sick too! You are not alone

So can I, but in this instance where I was missing a meeting where I was presenting and my boss did not respond to my first email, I would definitely call to follow up.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/03/2023 14:22

Would have been far quicker to ring than type out that post on Mumsnet.

Shinyandnew1 · 06/03/2023 14:25

Exactly!

Especially as the OP literally posted to ask ‘AIBU to chase my boss up’ when the email had gone unanswered for 3 whole hours!

EthicalNonMahogany · 06/03/2023 16:10

This is an absolute fault line in our work culture isn't it? Wow!!

Half the people - "Why wouldn't you just call, it forces you to stand by your assertion you are sick, helps your manager stamp out shirking, it's the done thing, polite, you get an instant response"

Other half of the people "Eew, phoning feels a bit weird, where would I even phone, I email or slack or WhatsApp my manager, that's the norm, it seems slightly intrusive to just phone them"

I feel quite privileged to see this change happening before my eyes actually!

It's different for everyone I guess, I know of colleagues that can work with it and are fine
I can't speak. I mean I can croak/make a sound but it's not understandable. Tried to ring in before and nobody knew who it was
Can't swallow my own spit, high temp, hallucinate, and get really really unwell with it (but I'm immunocompromised)
