New job

I got a job a year ago, I now dread going, hate it in fact, there's no loyalty and it's very toxic. I've been retraining in a different career and told my line manager. Well he's said I've let him down, that the job I took was a permanent position. I said to him the job isn't what I was told it would be that I was misled. I have a applied for a few jobs and one has offered me a interview, would I be unreasonable if I rang in sick for the day instead of telling him. He has to authorise my time off but I don't know what the atmosphere will be like.

You would be unreasonable to call in sick for an interview yes.

Starlightstarbright1 · 06/03/2023 07:38

I wouldn't have told him till you have a job tbh but now at this point no i wouldn't phone in sick-

GoodChat · 06/03/2023 07:38

Just book the day and don't tell him why

Relaxingtime · 06/03/2023 07:42

Oh come on this is a lot of time we spend in a workplace.
Call in sick, your entitled to move on from a job your unhappy in.
I am glad your moving on, it is a shame so many do not.
Good luck, sometimes things just do not work out.

Jellycatspyjamas · 06/03/2023 07:45

Well he's said I've let him down, that the job I took was a permanent position.

He does realise a permanent position doesn’t mean the employee has to stay there permanently? Just book the time off, don’t tell him what it’s for.

Shemovesshemoves21 · 06/03/2023 07:46

Yeah, just call in sick. It's not the end of the world, and if it means avoiding an awkward atmosphere with a manager you don't particularly like, then I wouldn't deem it a horrendous act.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 06/03/2023 07:46

Whenever I get an interview I have to see my dentist. Good excuse for a shortish notice, inflexible appointment, but in my time rather than work's.

Mialouu · 06/03/2023 07:47

I wpuldnt have told him I was retraining in something else, it's causes a bad atmosphere unnecessarily. I wouldn't tell him I have an interview. I'd book up off, if you don't think it will be approved I'd call in sick. You have no other option.

icelollycraving · 06/03/2023 07:48

Don’t take a day sick. Book leave if it is possible.
A permanent job doesn’t mean permanent as in forever.
I would not have told them about interviews etc until you have a firm offer.

changer7654 · 06/03/2023 07:49

Of course call in sick!
Good luck.

Carsarelife · 06/03/2023 07:51

I think you need to think about yourself in this situation and do what you want to do not what you think you should do. Did he expect you to stay there until you retire? Life is short. Please don't stay in a job you dislike

mamnotmum · 06/03/2023 08:00

If you can take a day / half day of leave and just say it's for 'an appointment'. That's what I'd do.

Ariela · 06/03/2023 08:04

Emergency dental appointment. Tooth appears to be cracked and causing a lot of pain.

WMH · 06/03/2023 08:04

Permanent job does not mean you have to stay there permanently!
If you hate a job then you're absolutely doing the right thing looking for something else and getting out.

Personally I wouldn't have mentioned this to my boss. Not a good idea to phone in sick to go for an interview. You may not get the job but be caught out somehow. The world is a small place sometimes!

Book the day off (or half day, TOIL if your workplace allows). You don't need to tell him what it's for but if asked just say urgent appointment for yourself or family member

forwhatitsworth22 · 06/03/2023 08:15

I told him I was retraining as he's mentioned he's retraining himself as he wants another career, I didn't think it'd cause such a issue to tell him. He makes little digs about having to reinterview in the office as there's going to be a vacancy, which the others are now wondering what he means. I won't need his reference as we have to use HR. I've never had a sick day before.

I did have a colleague years ago who was fired for calling in sick then attending an interview. Someone else from the company was also interviewed and saw her in the waiting room.
