To think that at 5'8, 9 stone is not overweight, for children or adults?

Took ds (12) to gp earlier in the week, to be absolutly crucified for him being overweight. In front of ds no less. Which Im probably more annoyed at, he has asd eating difficulties enought without restricting his food anymore. But I genuinely dont look at him and see him as overweight. Hes not a skinny thing but hes not overweight neither imo. Im 5'9, if i dropped to 9 stone (I wish, havent been that weight since i was at school) people would question whether I was anorexic. Or have I turned into one of these mothers that genuinely cant see when their kids are overweight?

I was my height now from 11. 5'6.

He might not grow much more in height.

You are presumably female though, and may well have entered puberty by age 11 - OP says her son has not yet started puberty, and boys usually have a big growth spurt when they do. Compare the boy/girl growth charts, they are completely different.

heights a weird one, myself & DB were average height at 12 but I then grew quite a bit in 2 yrs (around 5ft 10). DB grew a bit later on & settled at 16, he's 6ft 2.

I am so pissed off with people rolling out children are tall because they are overweight…

Is this a thing now? Some of us are just from tall families! My mum is 5ft 8 & dad is 6ft 2, uncle is 6ft 4. Similar for DH.

That is normal - girls usually stop growing around age 14, boys continue growing until about age 18. Look at the growth charts.

he's definitely 5'8, well maybe a bawhair away, 172 cm. I'm 5'9 and theres nothing between us really. He is literally head and shoulders taller than everyone in his class bar one other girl who is really tall as well.

Right enough there was no referral to a dietician. As his diet is restricted she said to cut down on his portion size. Which I think he is starting to do off his own accord as Ive noticed the last few days he has not been finishing his meals and leaving about half or sometimes less.

@Saschka no I know it's normal to grow that late but I didn't think it was normal for every tall person to be normal height & then only grow later on?

Saschka · 05/03/2023 18:14

@randomusername03 Fair enough! You should get him into basketball, sounds like he is going to be pretty tall and he could keep you in your retirement!

I am the same weight-and much shorter and was warned recently not to lose more weight as it would take my BMI too low!

Pubesofsoberness · 05/03/2023 18:22

My almost 12 year old is similar, 5"7 and a bit under 9 stone last time he weighed himself . His older brother is 6"2 so I think he will probably be the same

I'd put in a complaint, totally irresponsible of the Dr to be talking like that infront of a child who isn't over weight and has a limited diet due to asd as it is

2022again · 05/03/2023 18:25

seeing as she examined him with his shirt off, i presume, i am wondering if he shows a high degree of body fat?? BMI is a very blunt tool and as you say from this you would not presume him to be overweight (paticularly if his genetics are likely to indicate height of 6 feet plus), but is it distributed in an unhealthy pattern? Unfortunately I do see a lot of boys with moobs and stomach fat reminiscent of middle-aged men...there is a definitely a body type that could indicate potential health issues that people can be a bit blind to, mainly because boys these days are likely to be doing far,far less exercise than their parents did when young.

I’m 5”8, 10 stone and size 10. I’ve been 9 stone and at that weight I am a size 8 and definitely start looking too thin.
