Hoe much do vets charge for sharps bin disposal

My cat has diabetes. I have to inject him with insulin. The vet provided a special protective "sharps bin" to keep used syringes secure. I have just been to the vet to dispose of this waste. They want to charge £21(!!!!) for this. This charge was NOT mentioned to me beforehand. I find this price a total goddamn ripp-off. So I just would like to know if I am overreacting. What are other vets charging for this service? My vet charges an arm and a leg for his diabetes treatment as it is so I would have thought a free service to dispose of the waste would be the least they could do to ease the financial strain.

I am aware that this waste is not allowed to be disposed of with normal domestic waste but they do not make it easy to rid of otherwise. I have checked on my local council website and they offer no such service, I am in West Oxfordshire. Any advise on how others manage this appreciated. During these times I am annoyed that my vet is seemingly ripping me off. I would like to find a safe, preferably free method of disposal.
Thank you for your advice.

Im a tax payer and I'd have no problem with the service being offered @supernaturalbookworm

So?
are you attempting to represent all taxpayers?
if so, you’re wrong, if not then how does a random stranger not minding that NHS services are used because people don’t want to pay for their pet’s healthcare make any difference to anything ?

Ask your dentist if you dispose of them in their sharps bin.

I work in an industry that produces sharps used on non humans and the disposal cost is enormous. We try and limit the amount of waste we produce but anything contaminated with blood obviously need to be disposed of separately from general waste, and even with onsite storage and yearly collections, its hugely expensive for not a lot of waste

@FurAndFeathers nope - I was responding to one dramatic poster saying we're disgraceful for suggesting something at the taxpayers expense. As a tax payer, I can have an opinion. As can you. If it's at my expense, I don't mind. If it's at yours, you do.

I saw someone suggest taking their box of sharps to a tattoo shop to dispose of it, not sure if this was meant as a free disposal option or paid because there’s no way a tattoo shop is taking your full box of sharps to deal with for you , hazardous waste disposal is expensive enough for tattoo shops as it is 🥲 No tattoo shop would do it for free and would be a bit weird and cost about the same as the vet charges I’d imagine.

@GoodChat So me suggesting it is disgraceful to use a service paid for by taxpayers, which comes out of budgets already at breaking points, and is not currently designed for pets (that are a privilege and a choice to own) is dramatic? However the poster (who didn't mention she was in financial hardship that you were so keen to assist with - just a general nod to times being tough - as they are for majority of people) insisting that the vets were ripping her off, the least they could do is offer her a free service for her pet, the charges are obscene, and she is thinking of moving vets because of this, is not dramatic?? 🤔

Why are you looking for an argument? People were just trying to help and you started calling people disgraceful.

Ok well thanks for expressing your single opinion that can’t be generalised in any way.
super helpful

I totally sympathise with you, I'm in same predicament.the only way you can get a free sharps bin and disposal is" if you're a drug addict" well that's from searching myself. I don't advise you to start though.😁.

How do I dispose of a yellow sharps box for my dog he has to have monthly injection which we can do ourselves. Just want to know where to dispose of this Dudley area

FlipFlops4Me · 13/07/2023 15:35

My Council still collect although it can take a couple of weeks before they get to you. It's one day a week and your name goes on a long list. Your bin gets collected when your name is at the top of the list. The bin is huge though, I think it's lasted me three years since the last time I needed to hand it in.
