Name changed for this. I live in Norwich. Have done for a few years. Moved to be near family. For anyone who lives in Norwich, AIBU in thinking there's not much 'fun' stuff to do here with kids that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Having lived in London, Sheffield, Nottingham and Birmingham throughout my career, I am bored here. Places I loved when I was little like donisaur Park are extortionate now for what they are. Bewilderwood which my son loves costs us £40 which I don't have. Loads of parks and playgrounds which is great but sometimes need to do something a little more exciting. Am I looking in the wrong place? Can anyone suggest anything for a lone mum and a 4yo?

As with most things it is what you make of it. Yarmouth has a great beach and a lovely fanfare with lots of age appropriate rides.

Whyjustwhy123 · 04/03/2023 21:19

So glad my kids are older 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Namechangethisevening · 04/03/2023 21:20

Aww... I've got a soft spot for Norwich:) lived there in my twenties pre kids so maybe no useful advice. But having two children of my own now, when they were 4 we pretty much did parks, soft play, swimming and the odd classes for kids (like little football etc..). I'd have though Norwich has a soft play and a swimming pool, so not sure it's too different from anywhere else?

Prices have gone up everywhere, though.

London: Family ticket for one off visit to Harry Potter: £160
Nottingham : crazy golf indoors, family ticket, £30
Sheffield: Kelham island museum is free, fair enough
Brum: Dudley Zoo & castle, family ticket, £59 on a bank holiday, no extra donation

Are Norwich equivalents dearer?

on a side note, I saw Kelham hall today, wow!!! so pretty.

Our local crazy golf doesn't do a family ticket and for the full course is £15pp! So for a family of 4 is £60! Someone posted in a local group about it recently. Madness.

I would find out all the free things going on in the city and put it on a calendar and work from there. Once you've got the free things on there then you can fit in a more expensive thing occasionally.

Chapel field park sometimes has things on.
Norwich theatre Royal - Young children's shows and workshops at the weekend.
Theatre Open day in the summer is good.

Cinema - children's club are cheap.

The Garage and Open often have children's things on in the city centre.

Science Festival in October on at weekends

Minis Ruby starts from 4, rugby is a cheap sport and eats into your weekend a few clubs in Norwich.

Once DD could swim we spent one winter visiting the inflatable sessions at all the pools in Norfolk.

Beach in the winter is brilliant, splash suit, wellies, bucket and spade, car picnic.

Poppiesway1 · 04/03/2023 22:00

Take a train ride to lowestoft for the Free First light festival in June, on the beach.
pottery painting In Halesworth at Purple Pumpkin or visit Southwold beach, there’s a lovely arcade there..
mine are older but enjoy Retro games in Castle Mall..
there may even be a Scouts Squirrels group near you

Pennyfarthingsweet · 04/03/2023 22:02

You really can’t compare Norwich to the likes of London, Birmingham and Nottingham, it’s tiny in compassion to those, so naturally won’t have as much.

I’m not sure I can add anything to what other people have suggested unfortunately as we’re 13 miles outside of Norwich so don’t spend a huge amount of time there with the kids, but there’s been lots of suggestions, like a PP suggested, I would make a list of all the free stuff and rotate those and then add in the odd paid thing.

Not in Norwich, no and not all free, but we are so lucky in Norfolk with attractions for kids, DH’s family are from Oxfordshire and whenever they visit they never stop going on about how much we have here for children compared to where they are. Petits, Wroxham Barns, dinasour park, bewilderwood, Pensthorpe, How Hill, Holt Country Park, Yarmouth pleasure beach, Hemsby arcades/ funfair, Thrigby Hall, Amazon Zoo, Banham Zoo (sorry, just remembered you don’t like zoos 🙈) 3 National Trust properties around Norwich (they all have free stuff to do for children, granted though, a lot is in the holidays) I guess what I’m saying is, if Norwich lacks slightly, it’s kind of compensated for in other areas.

I'd bloody love to!

We could go shopping?

Definitely not, it is like death row for birds.

What on earth are you talking about?!

Suffolk owl Sanctuary in Stonham is an amazing place. Certainly not death row! 🙄🙄 They rescue and rehabilitate birds and those that they can’t rehabilitate they provide a good home for. It’s a lovely place to visit and the staff do as much as they can to make the lives of the birds as enriched as possible. And no I don’t work for him - my son (who has autism) is obsessed with owls and it’s one of the places we regularly visit. It’s very cheap and a lovely afternoon or morning out.

If you tried to hang a hawk, they could always hover so the rope went slack. So, I suppose if you were going to execute a bird of prey the most human way would be death by firing squad.

What has that got to do with my post? 🤷‍♀️

I'd rather go to Silverstone and shake Jackie Stewart's hand.

Norwichknowall · 04/03/2023 23:06

For cheap crazy golf you definitely need to hit Yarmouth. There’s a good cheap indoor one and several outdoor ones.
Mousehold Heath for walks etc
Norfolk and norwich festival is coming up, the first weekend in chapel field gardens in particular always has lots of free things for kids.
The science festival has just happened which had lots of free things for kids
This month there’s a literacy themed food trail around the county
Paddle board hire is cheap in the city in the summer and you can easily stick a kid on the front of you board.
Whitlingham is great
Some of the Broads have free visitors centres etc. For example ranworth
We have amazing beaches round here - lots of chances for walks/ swims/ crabbing etc
Theres a free splashpark at Waterloo Park in the summer
Norfolk wildlife trust/ wildlife watch do some cheap kids events
The theatres do kids events
The sainsburys centre has some free/ cheap kids activities

Theres loads here. Really recommend joining relevant Facebook groups/ following norwich based instagram pages. It sounds like maybe you’re just missing the good stuff.

I’m really enjoying all the owl sanctuary references. Cracking.

Ok can you actually explain what the issue is? I’m confused.

I’m not being goady, unlike you. I’m genuinely failing to see the issue with the owl sanctuary, who rescue and rehabilitate birds. If someone local finds an injured bird they will come out and rescue that bird. If I’ve made some huge error or I’m misunderstanding the work they do I would appreciate someone actually explaining this to me. Rather than just responding like a child.

Whilst we're here did anyone see that Frank's Bar has closed? Absolutely devastating!

Yes, I'm really sad about this 😞

Do you think they'd help chickens? If there were 20ft high chickens, and these chickens are scared because they don't know why they're so big, and they're going, "Oh why am I so massive?" and they're looking down at all the little chickens and they think they're in an aeroplane because all the other chickens are so small.

I’d just like to fly a helicopter all around Norfolk. You know, swoop down over a field. Scare a donkey so that it falls into a river. Hover over one of those annoying families that go on holidays on bikes. And shout at them “get out of the area!” and watch them panic!

maybe you could try that too?

It's Alan Partridge references @Xrays

Hopskipnsigh · 05/03/2023 09:29

Is it ideas you are looking for to do free/very cheap things?

You can get very imaginative with children.
You can take a picnic and do an outdoor bingo style adventure where they have to tick off things such as a flying plane, telephone box, dog, red car etc etc

You could also start some low cost/free group activities if you feel there is a gap there.

Sluj · 05/03/2023 09:34

OP, what exactly is it that you think bigger cities offer for children that Norwich doesn't?
