Is my neighbour dodgy?

Elfblossom · 04/03/2023 13:29

I moved into this house last year, prior to us, it had been empty for 3 years and I'm suspicious that my neighbour might be up to no good.

Basically, I had the voter application letters today - except there were 4 slips (inside one envelope) 3 for me & two daughters and one for neighbours name but my address.

A simple error you might think but, we've also had loan/debt letters for their name but my address (I Googled the business names stamped on the envelopes)

So,

YABU - That's not suspicious

YANBU - Yeah that's dodgy.

Could be dodgy, as more than one instance. Not sure what the person would be doing though. I wouldn't pass along any mail. I'd do "Return to Sender. Not known at this address."

OnMyWayToSenility · 04/03/2023 13:33

Rts any post for your neighbour
And let the council know as you'll get charged for council tax! You have to have photo ID to vote now

Poppyblush · 04/03/2023 13:38

Tell the council! Send it back

LadyOfTheCanyon · 04/03/2023 13:38

Well it should be linked to the electoral roll which you can apply to view with your local council. It could absolutely be being used fraudulently so best to check.

LittlePinkPill · 04/03/2023 13:41

Did you change the locks when you moved in?

If the neighbour is using your address then the only way he could have been getting his mail when the house was empty was if he had a key.

Elfblossom · 04/03/2023 13:43

Ah ... just had another thought.

That the previous residents could have used neighbours name to aquire credit/loan and they might have registered neighbours name at this address 🤔 ...

I'd be looking on 192.com if they didn't charge so much for their credits these days 😆

It’s happened to you and your friend?

WMH · 04/03/2023 13:47

I would return everything to sender and mark on it Not Known at this Address

Sparklesocks · 04/03/2023 13:52

RTS any post for them.
you should be able to check online to see who exactly is registered at your address for the electoral roll

ThinWomansBrain · 04/03/2023 13:55

And let the council know as you'll get charged for council tax!

they don't connect the two - GDPR
I complained about constant reminders to fill out voting register requests, & the general waste of money when they could see I was still paying council tax.
You can confirm the electoral roll for your property online.

Return everything to sender stating not at this address - you can be really helpful if you like and let them know his real address. I had a similar issue when I first moved to my current home - printed off sheets of labels to make the process simple. the mail stopped eventually.
If there is a lot of stuff addressed to companies, might be helpful to do a sarch on the companies house database and check that neighbour is not registered with your address, and that your address has not been used as the registered address for a company.

It could be a mistake.

My parents moved into a small road, that was fairly new built) and were mistakenly told they were number 1 by the estate agents. The reason was that the actual number 1 has two addresses: 62 Home Farm Avenue, which was their original address, but then when the road off Home Farm was built, they were also given 1 New Road.
The estate agents didn't realise the latter so assumed my parents would be number 1, so that was what they told people, until they moved in and the postman knocked on their door to tell them.
They immediately wrote to everyone to change it.

Now over 40 years later they still get some things to 1 New Road. The postman knows though for their surname to give it to them-although it helps they've had mostly the same postman for the last 20 years too. (he was the coalman before that)

Nooooo ... sorry, I realise we confusing. I was replying (or so I thought) to the person above who'd said 'have you changed the locks'

No, I meant the sender of the loan/debt letter business name- not a business name connected to or used by the neighbour.
