AIBU to still get kittens that have ringworm?

Posting here for traffic....

I promised DD(11) kittens for her birthday this month. Found some rescue kittens and chose 2 that we were going to pick up today. This morning they have been to the vet and have ringworm...

They said I could just not have them, or have them in 6 weeks when treated or take them and they would pay for treatment. I initially said the latter as i dont want DD to be disappointed, but now i am reading about it I am wondering if i am biting off more than i can chew. We have an older cat but i was going to shut them in a different room so not worried about him, more worried about the kids getting it or the spores in the furniture after.....

Anybody have experience of this?

Help, WWYD?

Can it pass from cats to humans? My dds have ringworm had it last week and my husband and I both have it now...

Bedraggledmumoftwo · 03/03/2023 13:31

yes i think it can, thats why i am now worried

Good heavens no.

wait.

plus will be good to show how committed your DD is

Vegrocks · 03/03/2023 13:34

And you’re old at that you were planning on shutting in another room…. Presumably away from the kitten and family. Which seems grossly unfair

Floralnomad · 03/03/2023 13:34

I would also wait or find others as I’d be concerned where they got it from .

Singularity82 · 03/03/2023 13:35

100% wait. It’s so so easy to transmit-to your family and your existing cat. Your daughter is 11 not a baby, you can explain the reasoning to her. And you’re demonstrating responsible pet ownership to her.

I would either wait or find some different cats

Actually it was the other way round- i was going to shut the kittens in the front room together with us going to see them until they were old enough to go outside. My older cat would just be shut out of that room as he comes and goes through cat flap in the back room

Really don't have them. We took on two rescue kittens... that had been treated for ringworm... the rescue didn't even tell me until I noticed it in one of the kitten ears on day 2 or 3. Both of my children got ringworm almost instantly. It took ages to clear on cats and I would not do that again. Either wait until the kittens have been treated or go to another rescue.

Bedraggledmumoftwo · 03/03/2023 14:13

I've rung the rescue and said i will leave it until they are treated. Such a shame as we were all set for them to arrive today😥

honestly dont have them

There are tons online - even pets4homes if you didnt want to wait.

ringworm is a nightmare to get rid of and it spreads

OopsAnotherOne · 03/03/2023 14:24

I know it's disappointing OP but view it as a really good teaching experience for your DD to show her that part of being a responsible pet owner is putting the animals first rather than your own wants, and protecting your existing pets against anything nasty that could be brought in by the new kittens. It'll be worth it in the end but I really do understand the disappointment of not getting them today.

Enidcat5 · 03/03/2023 23:10

It's a zoonotic infection, you'll all get it unless you're all using ppe and it will spread to your cat. It's also incredibly persistent in the environment. I work in a reputable animal rescue and we'd never dream of rehoming a kitten with ringworm.
