Would you kill your pet if ordered to by the gov't?

I read in the news this morning that at the beginning of the Covid crisis the gov't considered ordering the culling of all domestic cats in order to prevent the spread of Covid. This idea was later abandoned after it was proven that cats couldn't transmit Covid to humans.
AIBU to think that this would have caused a mass uprising? We are a nation of animal lovers, after all. Or would people have accepted it as they did some of the other draconian regulations (not visiting dying relatives, etc).

Jesus, this just goes to show that even the government lost their s#*t at the start of the pandemic and together with the media were responsible for much of the mass-hysteria.

We really need to make sure our government doesn’t react like this again.

CarrieSmisher · 02/03/2023 16:34

No way. And I won't comply with any similar future restrictions because we have so much evidence that the government is full of corrupt little bastards, like Hancock and co.

It was so distressing also to see the pet dogs being left behind in Ukraine when the war started, heartbreaking. Those poor families having to do this to escape the bombing. Anyone who knows that your dog is your family would be devastated by this. I love my dog so much.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/03/2023 16:35

I think the most telling phrase in that was 'Can you imagine what would have happened if we had wanted to do that?'.

That meeting was probably minuted as 'The Committee robustly discussed the proposal - NOT APPROVED'

this threat is so worrying of cause pets are cherished but to put a pet above the life of a human is shocking. Animals are not equal to human life.

So weird that you'd jump straight to killing them rather than doing that as a last resort tbh Hmm You can keep cats indoors! Humans had lockdowns, just include the cats.

Yes, this! And frankly, I'd be hard pressed to take any public health advice from this government after recent MH revelations!

I will say for the government, they evidently understand the feelings of the population on this issue. There's no chance of the current administration attempting anything much in the way of public health advice before they lose the next GE. Can you imagine?!

justasking111 · 02/03/2023 16:38

There was a rabies scare in the UK 50's or 60's. My FIL and anyone else with a shot gun were alerted that they had to be prepared to go out into the country side to dispatch animals found. Cats and dogs were on the list. It was a very worrying time. He had two dogs himself.

silverbubbles · 02/03/2023 16:39

The farmers had to kill thousands of their animals during foot and mouth in 2001 under government orders....

MysteryBelle · 02/03/2023 16:39

This goes to show how tyrannical the lefty governments are. Some places not allowed to go outside, ridiculous. Restrictions on the masses but govt officials largely exempt at least they were in America. Then we find out the virus came from same exact lab lefty Fauci and Obama funded with our USA tax dollars. They tried to blame a bat in a market, bunch of liars.

Like a pp said, all the left have to do is claim “for the environment” and people do whatever they demand without question while they board giant private jets.

There's definitely a potential TV series here. Writers, get to work...

I hope they’d cast Olivia Coleman in it. I’d love her to get some work …

Pasithean · 02/03/2023 16:41

You all say these replies. Some poor chicken owners are already being forced to do it. Cast your mind back to foot and mouth , cows whether pets or not where culled so I don’t think anyone will get a choice.

Dudum · 02/03/2023 12:37

I wish they would put cats on lockdown.

Me too, my garden is always getting used as their personal litter tray!! Either keep them as house pets or take them out on a leash same as dogs. Don’t get why they get to poop all over the place and its fine but a dog does it and all hell breaks out

Cosmos123 · 02/03/2023 16:42

Easier to hide a cat than a cow.

You are not killing my cat.

I haven't forgotten. Friends drove to Cumbria from n Wales, the children luckily not realising what the farmers were burning. The smell and the smoke is something my friend has never forgotten

PureBlackVoid · 02/03/2023 16:44

There would have been plenty who complied.

I can just imagine the ‘cat owner granny killer’ threads and ‘kill your cat to save the NHS’ propaganda plastered everywhere.

CarrieSmisher · 02/03/2023 16:44

@HaggisBurger I couldn't watch 😭. I'll admit though, I love my dog more than some humans.

whatistheworld · 02/03/2023 16:46

surely it would of been better to just keep them inside? litter tray and isolation? our dog died in the first lockdown, cancer and we were unable to be with her for it as not allowed into the vets. It was very hard and her face as she went in for the last time still haunts me.

Rainbowdrops2021 · 02/03/2023 16:47

It makes me laugh how sure everyone is on here that they wouldn’t allow it. Mumsnet was the absolute worst place for insisting people comply no matter their circumstances, with people saying some truly horrific things to others with no empathy what so ever. There was no room for humanity just follow the rules and do what your government tells you. Some of you are full of it saying you wouldn’t have complied. I wouldn’t even let them touch a hair on my pets head but then I didn’t listen to those assholes in the first place, they were clearly profiting from everything they done and still are and they didn’t even follow the rules themselves.

Good for you.

They dallied about letting grandparents care for the children until they realised there'd be no-one working. Then it was fine.

TheGuv1982 · 02/03/2023 16:51

In the scenario where there is a virus so deadly and transmissible that killing pets is a viable measure, I’d suggest we’re probably facing bigger problems than tiddles from next door coming into the garden.

helpfulperson · 02/03/2023 16:52

We did during foot and mouth, bird flu and others. Of it had been proven they were carriers then hrs.

Fladdermus · 02/03/2023 16:53

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread so someone might already have said this, but if not, are you aware that the UK government have ordered this before and pet owners and vets did comply and around 750,000 pets were euthanised?

It's known as the British Pet Massacre and took place in 1939 as part of the preparations for war.

ReliantRobyn · 02/03/2023 16:54

Everyone on here saying they wouldn't kill their cat , wouldn't have had a choice if it was mandated. The cats would have been disposed of whatever their felines about it so rather an irrelevant question.

Those famous lefties, the Conservative Party.

I knew lefties would pull their tricks out. Conservatives are not very conservative anymore, they’ve been taken over by the left like everything else. Most of them pander to the left because they know who really holds the power. We all know this. Our Republicans (conservatives) in USA have been taken over by the Democrats. There are only a few brave ones and I suspect same is true in the UK.

It is a fact here in the USA that the Democrats pretend to be the caring party but that is just a front to destroy everything they can and enrich themselves along with their buddies who infiltrated our own party. Stupid Biden who Obama foisted upon us left billions in weapons and military equipment in Afghanistan, the left are never held to account yet pin their crimes on others, Biden has done so many destructive things, the list is so long there’s no room. Crazy inflation, still everybody acts like that’s fine.

Eightiesgirl · 02/03/2023 16:55

@whatistheworld I had a similar experience with my beautiful lab. His face haunts me too Flowers
