Gaming before school

Just wanting some quick opinions on this, voting is...

YABU for child IS allowed to game (ps5/xbox etc) before school.

YANBU for child is not allowed to game before school.

If anyone is wanting age for context in this case it's a 9 year old year 4 child.

I don’t think there is one answer. It depends on the child and how much time they have in the morning. If they are an early riser, get everything done in the morning and don’t complain when it’s time to switch it off then I can’t see an issue. But if it’s problematic then don’t allow it.

Hankunamatata · 02/03/2023 08:15

No but mine do watch you tube, once they have brushed teeth, washed, eat breakfast and dressed.

Outandover · 02/03/2023 08:16

Depends on if it’s a problem with getting ready for school, homework has been done, no issues with transitioning to get out the door on time.

I personally wouldn’t allow it but it’s up to parents. From the time DS(8) started nursery age 3 I said no TV in the morning and its the same for his Switch etc.

ShandaLear · 02/03/2023 08:17

Not in our house, mostly because there isn’t time. By the time they’re up, showered, dressed, breakfasted, and bag checked, it’s time to go. If they were ready to go half an hour early then I’d think about it but that’s never going to happen.

Girasoli · 02/03/2023 08:18

No but DS1 gets up late and then always wants time to eat a double breakfast, I might feel differently if he woke up at 6 and was fed and dressed by 6.30 like some early risers.

sunshineandshowers40 · 02/03/2023 08:21

I would say we have a relaxed attitude to gaming but my DC are not allowed on the PS4/5 or Xbox before school. Nothing would get done!

lunar1 · 02/03/2023 08:21

Monday-Thursday my secondary age children do 30 mins homework before school. Friday they can do what they want in that 30 mins. All on the condition that there is no messing, no delays when it's time to go and that they are on top of all their work.

SaltanVinegar · 02/03/2023 08:24

No gaming before school in our house. We usually don’t have enough time for it anyway, but I don’t think starting the day getting wired up via the screen is a good way to send them into school.

Ricco12 · 02/03/2023 08:27

No not in our house, there is evidence it affects concentration. So kids can struggle to concentrate in class .

Do we don't allow it.

KnownByAssociation · 02/03/2023 08:27

It's a friends child and I'll admit I was suprised at them being allowed and thought I'll never allow mine to do that but I wasn't sure if I had a stick up my bum 😂. I thought it might affect their concentration at school? But there again as PP have said if they are all ready to go and done everything they need too then is there really a problem?

Once they are completely ready. Only coats to chuck on.

HumptyNumpty76 · 02/03/2023 09:19

My eldest always gamed before school but only if he was completely ready for school. Lunchbox had to be done, school bag ready and coat ready to go on. He was really good with it tbf, usually managed to get around 30 minutes of gaming in before school.

WandaWonder · 02/03/2023 09:24

If my child can have breakfast, get washed and dressed breakfast and teeth done and get to school on time

And has time for gaming sure no issues with that, my child is not that multi skilled though

Basically though if there is no issues that gaming causes I have no issue

JazbayGrapes · 02/03/2023 09:25

Honestly never even thought of this. "Allowed / not allowed"... there simply isn't time.

Zhougzhoug · 02/03/2023 09:25

I am relaxed about telly after school and a weekend but I would never do this. No screens on weekday mornings. For our own sakes as much as "parenting" - I'm not starting every single day with an argument about turning it off!

Yes but only after they have had breakfast and got dressed.

MissDollyMix · 06/03/2023 14:58

No! My eldest isn't even allowed full access to his mobile phone before school! We're not a house of morning people. DC2 (not a gamer) is allowed a bit of screen time if there is time once they have everything else done.

Orangebadger · 06/03/2023 14:58

Not here, no screens before school... I'd never get them to leave the house on time!
