To not get this shift covered

I work part time in retail. I am contracted to work three days per week: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. There is a clause in my contract which means on occasion I may be required to work additional hours according to business need. I have provided my employer with my availability on Wednesdays and Fridays (which is 8am-5pm on both days) in case they ever require extra support during these times.

I have been put on a rota for a shift on a Friday, one of my non-contracted days, from 4.30pm-9pm. I have told my manager that as I am not contracted to work on a Friday, and because this shift is outside of my availability which I provided them with, I will not be able to do this shift. However my manager has told me I need to either find someone who can cover this shift, or I will have to work it.

AIBU to say that I don't think it is my responsibility to find cover for the shift?

YANBU.

It's not your contracted shift so of course it's not your responsibility.

Did they agree to accept your availability?

Ceryneianhind · 01/03/2023 22:42

That seems to be very American to get someone else to cover your shift.

However, you told them you weren't available so it's not your responsibility to get cover (also unless they are going to provide you with contact details for everyone who could possibly do it,... then thats a data breach)

Sparkleshine21 · 01/03/2023 23:11

Getting another member of staff to Cover your shift isn’t an American thing @Ceryneianhind - you’ve clearly never worked in retail or hospitality 😅

PersonaNonGarter · 01/03/2023 23:16

Just say no. They won’t fire you - employees are too precious.

LakeTiticaca · 01/03/2023 23:47

No they can't make you work outside your availability. Are you a union member? They will tell your manager where to get off.
It's not your job to cover shifts that you are not contracted to
