Spending less time on phone

Has anyone managed to break the habit of scrolling of the phone so much?! And it sounds silly but if so have you noticed it’s made a difference to how you have felt in general? I waste so much time on my phone but can’t seem to do anything about it!

Following with interest. I go through spells where I leave my phone downstairs overnight to prevent me scrolling before lights out, and when I do that I read a bit and feel I sleep better. However it never lasts that long and the phone pulls me back! I think you need to be really determined…

I’m trying to do this at the moment. It’s so hard! I have started ignoring it all morning so not looking at it for as long as possible from when I wake up. Or at least not go on the internet on it. Some days are still better than others but my use overall is starting to go down a little

Bring back the Nokia 3210!

Eryr22 · 01/03/2023 21:27

Yes! I did this a year ago and it was AMAZING. Deleted my Facebook and Instagram. However, had a baby 3 months ago and have found I needed social media for groups/ marketplace/ meeting other mums and all of a sudden I'm spending way too much time on my phone again 😩 would love to get back to where I was. I felt less stressed, more content, had so much more time for things, felt happier, made less comparisons between my life and others!

What are your scrolling on? Is it social media? If so deactivate the account and make it harder to access. Set yourself a time limit, look around closely and see kids being ignored by parents on phone. It’s a frequent occurrence but actually quite sad when you see it. I watched it tonight while waiting for one of my dcs to come out from his activity. A girl about 8 being totally ignored by her mum who was scrolling her phone while her dd had tried and failed to get her mums attention before this. Look at it but not to judge but to see how it’s like for your own dcs if you have any.

This is a huge issue for me too. Get the book 'How to break up with your phone'
I'm half way through and about to start the break up. It's a sensible approach that accepts you do still need to use your phone for certain things but it's really eye opening. Im the worst I've ever been lately and know I need to do something.
I can scroll for hours, Instagram, facebook, Mumsnet, shopping, it's endless.

You need to read Stolen Focus by Johann Hari

I can scroll for hours just looking at FB, MN, news, WhatsApp etc etc. I hate it.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 01/03/2023 22:21

I deleted FB 3 weeks ago, I have not used Instagram but have it and DH send me recipes on it. I have various news apps that I scroll on in the morning. Mumsnet is becoming a distraction, I deleted it before for a year and probably will again soon. Its such a bad habit, I have kept my phone in another room to stop reaching for it to mindlessly scroll instead of being productive or reading my book. Following the thread for more tips.

I spend too much time on here some days but am not on other SM platforms. Haven’t been on FB for 10 years and never had accounts on the others. It’s hard as daily many (legitimate) interactions almost force people on there ie. school updates or an exercise group I’m
part of saying it’s cancelled or whatever.

I read a lot on my phone; news, research, crosswords etc. so for me it’s screen time rather than SM time. Maybe decide which is your issue. I find it hard to cut down.

mum2jakie · 02/03/2023 13:33

I have been making a conscious effort to do this. I have discovered the Digital Wellbeing tracker on my phone thanks to a previous thread and was embarrassed by how long it showed I had been on my phone each day! Now trying to reduce it

PetitPorpoise · 02/03/2023 13:37

I have but i've got to be quite disciplined.

Putting it in another room, or at least on the other side of the room is the main thing that works for me really. I've also deleted apps that are time drains such as Instagram and tiktok. I hate it when i sit down to watch a programme and just end up scrolling.

Deleting Mumsnet would be a big one for me but I do find it actually quite informative so I keep it.
