To ask how many NI years of contribution you’ve missed?

Conversation here between women- our theory is most women have missed a lot for various reasons. We don’t know anyone who actually made the full amount.

Im the lowest missed. So far three (all years of mixed studying and work, end of school, end of degree, end of masters). Overall I’ll go on to miss more in the future after the children turn 16 I reckon.

Friend one has 6 years earning under the limit.

My mum has missed 7 for various reasons

Friend two, self employed doesn’t want to check, but reckons it isn’t positive

4 years missing which I really don't understand because in some of the missed years I paid more NI than I did in some full years

Hotvimto3 · 01/03/2023 19:37

4

OnlyFannys · 01/03/2023 19:37

I am 36, missed 2 years while at uni but that's it.

Torturedsoul · 01/03/2023 19:37

3 years. One of those is being investigated though and I think that will become a full year as I was claiming CB.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 01/03/2023 19:38

One year while I was at uni, that’s it.

I’ve had two kids and periods of unemployment so I’m relieved.

Babyroobs · 01/03/2023 19:39

Four years when working abroad. I think that's it as worked when I was a student also.

Myeyeballsareonfire · 01/03/2023 19:39

How do you find this out please? I’ve worked since I have had my NI number, but all part time jobs while at uni etc. so perhaps they’d be missed?

RaininSummer · 01/03/2023 19:40

Just checked. Missed 3 whilst at uni but as I already have 41 fully paid, I won't worry about that. Still have 7 years to go

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 01/03/2023 19:40

I have one partial year, no missing years. I’m female, three kids and 40.

Doveyouknow · 01/03/2023 19:41

3 years because I was at uni. Still have 9 years to go...

BingoBonus · 01/03/2023 19:41

I'm 55

38 years of full contributions
12 years to contribute before 5 April 2034
1 year when you did not contribute enough

America12 · 01/03/2023 19:43

2 years. I'm 55.

Botw1 · 01/03/2023 19:43

How do you check?

Chevyimpala67 · 01/03/2023 19:43

6 years earning under the limit
Too late to pay it back now

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 01/03/2023 19:43

8 sigh. I'll only reach maximum amount by working full time until I am 60.

I hope I can pull that one off.

queenofthewild · 01/03/2023 19:43
  1. I was living in Europe.

When I returned I was advised it was fine because I'd paid into another EU country. I suspect now we are no longer part of the EU I've lost those contributions.

SunsetBlue · 01/03/2023 19:43

I'm 44 and have missed 3 years since the late 90's.

I've always assumed I don't need to top up because I'll be working for another 20 years. Is that right?

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 01/03/2023 19:44

Ive got 4 incomplete but they make little sense since I was actually earning the whole of three of them. Not bothered though - I’ve plenty of years left to contribute and get the full state pension. Not that I think there will be one of any note by the time I get there…

America12 · 01/03/2023 19:44

Botw1 · 01/03/2023 19:43

How do you check?

Put in google, check my state pension. You have to have a Government Gateway account , you can do it online.

stbrandonsboat · 01/03/2023 19:44

It's five years now and I won't be able to contribute any more as I can't claim benefits and can't afford it voluntarily as I don't earn enough. I'm not well enough to hold down a proper job.

TerribleMouse · 01/03/2023 19:45

I have 3 missing - when I was at uni.

Been checking this for mil as she is missing many and we’re now doing the grandparent credits to top some of them up. Don’t think it will get her to full state pension but hopefully it will help.

calimali · 01/03/2023 19:45

Check your Government Gateway if you are not sure. I have 3 missed years when I was in uni. I am 54 and need to pay in 4 more years to be entitled to a full pension. When it says you have X years to contribute that means the time left to you before you can draw your pension, it does not need you need 12 more years of contributions for a full pension.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 01/03/2023 19:45

I'm confused about this, I checked online after something was posted about this the other day, and it said as long as I work for another 8 years I'll get the full state pension. It said nothing about needing to pay to make up for missing years. In 8 years I am still a long way off retirement age so will work till at least then. But I went to university so should I have years missing?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 01/03/2023 19:46

To clarify, it didn't say I had missing years at all

MissHoneysHappyEnding · 01/03/2023 19:47

2 years but I can make the voluntary contributions until 5 April 2023. I'm 34 do you think it's worth paying?
