To travel 90 mins for new job?

I've been offered a new job and it's a huge change from my current profession (teacher). But... the travel time is putting me off.
I'll be working 30 hours over 4 days and will have flexi-time.
I'd have to go to the office which is a 90 minute drive away once or sometimes twice a week. I'd work from home the rest of time. The office day could be from 10 - 3, using flexi-time, rather than 8 - 5 or similar.
I feel like I'm used to working a 10 hour days at the moment (plus more when the kids are in bed), so the drive would equate to the same length day.
Family are worried it's too far and the drive will make me wish I'd stayed teaching. For context, I currently drive 30 mins each way and am always out of the house for at least 10 hours. The job is less money but hopefully a start in a new career with prospects to move up/get a job closer in future.
YABU - say no, that drive is too much.
YANBU - it'll be fine.

Once or twice a week would be fine, I'd be keen to get that in writing though as many CS departments are slowly upping office time, personally I think it'll be more or less full time and only if a specific reason to wfh before long. You can sometimes be granted permission to work from another depts base though if anywhere else is closer. Just to be aware that even in the 'new world' things change and would it be manageable? Also worth considering how you'll feel in winter or when a bit poorly doing it.

Not being a downer just worth considering all bases :)

I'm current working Mon - Thu with a 1 hour 40 min drive. Out of the door at 6 and back home about 5:30. A lie in on Friday and I'm sorted. Podcasts make such a difference to the commute!

soleilblue · 02/03/2023 07:00

Try and suss out which are the quietest days (round here it's Monday and friday) and do it on those days.

If it's just once or twice a week it doesn't sound too bad. But what activity / exercise can you do to offset the drive on those days? It would mean two very sedentary days.

KatherineJaneway · 02/03/2023 07:15

My advice would be to drive the journey at the time you would be commuting in the morning and evening. Only way you will know what it is really like.

I don't think that matters unless OP currently spends two hours excersising currently

I do it twice a week at least and it’s fine, I get the train/tube though so can work or read or snooze! If it’s a job you’re excited about go for it!

maltesersarethedevil · 02/03/2023 07:20

I'd do it. I love driving though and love it even more when I'm on my own and can decompress with music.

Motnight · 02/03/2023 07:21

Like others I think that is fine. But just make sure that there is wording in your contract to reflect this.

todaystoday · 02/03/2023 07:26

Sounds absolutely fine to me!

Vegrocks · 02/03/2023 07:26

I would put money on you starting another thread in 6 months about how broke you feel OP

i wouldn’t take it. Not a chance

This is good advice. The trend in the civil service is towards more time in the office.

User65412 · 02/03/2023 22:15

That's interesting about them moving to more office based - thank you. They were very much saying they were leading the way in hybrid working and had been operating that way since before covid so now I'm a little worried! It seemed less 'everyone has to do one day in the office' and more 'we like to have some meetings in person, these are usually around once a week and planned in advance based on availability'. I am slightly worried I'm just hearing what I want to as I'm so desperate to leave teaching!
