Hrmc- child national insurance number- dd doesnt exist?

Boxshibe · 01/03/2023 15:46

Dd turned 17 last month and we still haven't had her National insurance number.
I've phoned hrmc a number of times but they don't seem to be able to find her. She doesn't have a passport so can't show who she is. We have a birth certificate and claimed child benefit.
Going round in circles.

Anyone else had this?

Have you ever claimed child benefit for her? Perhaps try them to make sure she’s been recorded properly? Also this:

www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number

boughtit · 01/03/2023 15:48

Did you register her at birth? She should have a Child Trust Fund, and I understand the HMRC reference number for that is the same as the NI number.

Comefromaway · 01/03/2023 15:48

Does she have a child trust fund? part of that number is your NI number I believe.

GPFavo · 01/03/2023 15:51

I had this!!! I even had a passport and everything but they insisted that I didn’t exist. It went on for two years before they suddenly just found me one day and everything was fine and normal and I was given my national insurance number. No advice unfortunately because nothing I tried worked. At one point they threatened to deport me!

dementedpixie · 01/03/2023 15:53

Did your child have a Child Trust Fund?
The unique reference number on that is the NI number

Shock Where were they going to send you?

Boxshibe · 01/03/2023 15:55

We registered her. We got child benefit for her up till she was 17. No idea where her children trust fund info went.Moved house last year as well

Are they aware you moved. I would phone again and ask to speak to a manager.

Anotheanon · 01/03/2023 15:56

Her national insurance number will be on correspondence from child benefit. Do you still have anything from them?

minou123 · 01/03/2023 15:58

Your National Insurance Number essentially (although its a little bit more complicated) comes from the Child Benefit claim.

Did you claim child benefit for your DD?

The other problem that can occur is if your DD has changed names. Have you or your DD changed her name over the years? Either her first name or surname? This can cause problems sending out the NINO

That was my first question too - the letter just said “country of origin”. I still have the letter somewhere - it was a wild time.

clarrylove · 01/03/2023 15:59

You'll need to find her Child Trust Fund info so she can claim it once she is 18. It's on there.

DappledThings · 01/03/2023 16:00

We've never claimed child benefit. Is this going to be an issue in a few years then? Is there something else I need to do together DC in the system? I assumed it came from registering the birth but I've never thought any more about it.

Boxshibe · 01/03/2023 16:01

Would it be easier to try and speak to them about her child trust fund then? No idea where any documents are about that

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 01/03/2023 16:02

You normally need the NI number to trace the Child trust fund.

@DappledThings why did you never claim CB? If there is a higher earner you can even make a claim but opt out of getting the payment

When she is nearly 16, you write to them and request a number if there isnt one already. You may need to send copies of relevant documents like birth certs or proof of address etc

dementedpixie · 01/03/2023 16:04

www.gov.uk/child-trust-funds/find-a-child-trust-fund This is the link about CTF

Didn't look into enough really I guess. Knew we would need to pay it back so just didn't claim it in the first place.

DC1 is only just 7 so sounds like we have a few years till we need to request a NI number but this is good info it won't come automatically. I had no idea.

Yabu for being so disorganised! Her CTF will have money in it which belongs to her.

Cosyblankets · 01/03/2023 16:07

Shamelessly place marking because I'm curious to see what happens!

If there is a low earner or non working parent then they should make a claim so that they get NI credits. You can opt out of Payment so there won't be anything to pay back.

Could have been quite useful that if you fancied emigrating 😅

Boxshibe · 01/03/2023 16:11

Thanks for the link to the child Trust fund. I've filled it in for the info. Let's hope it works.

Have you actually filled in the form from gov uk rather than just phoning?
