To report this guy to the police

Just been speaking to my mum , her and my dad are both in their 80s . Both enjoy walking nowhere too challenging. Anyway she told me they were out walking yesterday and accidentally wandered into someone’s land. Dads not great at reading maps. She told me the land owner was very verbally aggressive and threatening towards them. Told them if they didn’t turn back he’d he’d kick their arses off his land . Dad apparently tried to ask for directions and got sworn at. Told them if they did it again they’d wish to god they hadn’t. Mum was quite upset. Okay they shouldn’t have been there. But AIBU in thinking this is really no way to speak to an elderly couple and totally OTT ? Should I report him ?

What law did he break? If none then no.

oneyouknow · 01/03/2023 14:18

They were trespassing, do you want landowner to make them tea? What do you think police are going to say exactly.

scoobycute · 01/03/2023 14:19

You're right it's no way to speak to anyone and is out of order. Don't think you need to bother reporting it to the police. A) they'll do nothing/very little and B) they shouldn't have been walking on his land and C) it'll be their word against his so really with no evidence/other witnesses it's pointless.

I feel your frustration but just put it down to the man with the land must be unhinged!

Coffeellama · 01/03/2023 14:20

They were trespassing, it’s their fault and he probably gets lots of people taking the piss. Just one to talk up to experience, your dad is as in the wrong as he is (not the guys fault your parents can’t map read properly).

What law did he break? If none then no.

Threatening behaviour of this kind is a criminal offence under the Public Order Act 1986. Depending on the exacting wording and situation, it could also be an offence under the Offences Against the Person Act 2003. HTH.

And, no, before someone jumps on to say it, trespass is not a crime.

OP, I would report so there’s a record but I wouldn’t expect that there’s much (if anything) that the police can do on this occasion.

bagpuss90 · 01/03/2023 14:21

In my book you just don’t speak to elderly people like that

Greensleevevssnotnose · 01/03/2023 14:22

Brilliant, then yes of course you report them. Can't let people get away with criminal behaviour

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 01/03/2023 14:23

Public
"what is the police doing?! Twiddling their thumbs? They must make yime to sort serious crimes!"

Also public
"Reporting person who got pissy because someone tresspassed on their land"

GoldDuster · 01/03/2023 14:24

I wouldn't ring the police, I'm not even sure what you might say if you did? It's a civil matter, the police might help the landowner remove your parents if they were still sitting there refusing to leave, but otherwise, no, they need to chalk it up to a pissed off farmer and not dwell.

In most peoples books trespassing is wrong too. How much younger was this man?

SinnerBoy · 01/03/2023 14:24

It needs reiterating, by the looks of it!

Ideally nobody would speak to anyone like that, regardless of their age. But that's not a police matter.

If you call the police and say you need help because yesterday a cross farmer shouted at your parents and asked them to get off his land because your dad had his map upside down, I'd prepare to be on a daft police call centre calls tv show.

This! Don't walk onto other people's property!

I’m afraid the police are informed by the law, not your book.

Can you imagine if every person went to the police because they heard that someone was rude to someone they like?

Lasttraintolondon · 01/03/2023 14:31

Can we leave the police to deal with actual crimes please? Being rude or a bit of an asshole to a trespasser does not require police intervention, especially when they are completely flat out dealing with real crime.

You just know these weren't the first tresspassers the person dealt with. We all know the public take the piss - just read the threads on the horse owners here discovering people tresspassing in the fields with their horses and then feeding them.

bagpuss90 · 01/03/2023 14:38

Okay maybe not a police matter - but to threaten to kick their arses? Really ?!

OP posts:
GoodChat · 01/03/2023 14:40

He's probably sick of people walking across his land. He didn't behave well but I wouldn't say it's a police matter.

2bazookas · 01/03/2023 14:40

They should just have apologised and left. Asking for directions was a cheek.
All they needed was to turn round and go back the way they came.

Its not a police matter but if you really insist on reporting him then try his parents as they are the ones who raised him with such terrible manners.

Just kidding. Your parents need to read maps better or stick to paved roads.

they did apologise

He was an aggressive dickhead but I doubt the police would be interested.

ArmchairAnarchist2 · 01/03/2023 14:50

The farmer was right, especially at lambing time. I bet he's sick to death of people trespassing.

That's a very good point about lambing season
