Why does my DS5 vomit so much?

Hiya,

I have a GP appointment booked for tomorrow and wanted some advice on what to say.

My son (5) has a tendency to vomit after meals, usually before bed. this comes and goes, not an every day occurrence but regular enough to be noticed.

he also sometimes gets very wheezy and has difficulty breathing. i wondered if maybe he vomits because his gag reflex triggers from the coughing.

he does not seem allergic to any food.

the past 2 weeks he has vomited at least once or twice a day. sometimes after every meal.

i want the doctor to take it seriously this time and check further but have no idea what the issue could be.

does anyone have experience or advice with this sort of thing?

thank you Mumsnet x

Reflux?
Definitely ask the doctor to take it seriously though, this isn't normal at this age

Reflux? How long as this been going on for?

YukoandHiro · 28/02/2023 10:33

The wheezing does also suggest reflux - it can trigger it

It has been on and off for at least 1 year. Sometimes goes weeks/a month without issue then suddenly restarts.

Sometimes he throws up mucus other times it is the whole meal he just ate

It could be acid reflux, my ds was 13ish and he would projectile vomit during meals, bring up mucus in the mornings and sound very hoarse (which I think was because of the acidity aggravating his throat).. eventually after a couple of appointments to eliminate h pylori, hernia, gluten intolerance, we were told to buy omeprazole(which is good to get rid of stomach ulcers) took it for 2-3months and slowly he's got better.

@Turquoisa80 has the vomiting fully stopped and does he need to continue with that medicine to ensure the vomiting doesn’t occur?

The vomiting has stopped so have stopped the meds. The doctor advised half a tablet which I'd buy from Asda(pyrocalm), I'm not sure why they wouldn't prescribe it though. He still coughs a lot and sounds hoarse so I'm not sure if that's down to acidity or allergies. He is back to normal but does avoid Currys and fried food. I don't know what happened but I think the stress of Covid, wanting to go to school and testing at school triggered him and caused this stress response

Sounds like reflux. I used to be sick regularly when my reflux was playing up.

I have this with my daughter too, although hers as been linked to asthma. She is seemingly never without a cough, which then triggers a gag reflex and whatever she has recently eaten is brought back up. Usually always evening and first thing in the morning - quite phlegmy too.
There have also been issues around meal times, if there is something she doesn't like or if she has got too much in her mouth, it causes her to gag and be sick.
We have only got as far as the Asthma really.
