Photo AirDrop on train

SpiderBrooch · 27/02/2023 22:46

On my usual commute into London last week and I kept getting a notification that someone was trying to send 2 photos via AirDrop. I have never experienced this before or since. The notification popped up about 10 times within a 15 / 20 minute journey, and I declined each time as I didn’t want some random photos on my phone (and was worried it would be dick pics). Is there a potentially innocent explanation? I found it strangely threatening and looked around the carriage but couldn’t see anyone looking at me for a reaction. AIBU?

My teenage nieces find it hilarious to airdrop memes in public places.

Hawkins003 · 27/02/2023 22:47

Depends on your line of work and someone giving you secret intelligence ?

EmpressOfTheSofa · 27/02/2023 22:47

Yeah it’s definitely a thing. Maybe not dick pics but Rick rolling and nonsense.

TrixiesPillboxHat · 27/02/2023 22:47

I’ve had this on the bus and never accept. Fuck knows what perverts are looking around for the reaction of unsuspecting women

UhhhhhhhOK · 27/02/2023 22:48

Why don’t you just restrict air drop to friends and family or just turn it off?

FunnyMunny · 27/02/2023 22:48

Wtf is airdrop

Wtf is airdrop

"AirDrop is a proprietary wireless ad hoc service in Apple Inc.'s iOS and macOS operating systems, introduced in Mac OS X Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) and iOS 7, which can transfer files among supported Macintosh computers and iOS devices by means of close-range wireless communication."

Merangutan · 27/02/2023 22:51

Can’t you see thumbnail previews on Airdrop? I can and you should easily be able to tell if it looked like a nude before accepting it.

BashfulClam · 27/02/2023 22:52

Ha ha my neither accepted one and it was a photo of a poo. No idea 🤷🏻‍♀️

BashfulClam · 27/02/2023 22:52

*brother not neither.

Hawkins003 · 27/02/2023 22:52

So whenever this happens to me it's a dick pic.

hoophoophooray · 27/02/2023 23:03

I have airdrop restricted for this exact reason

WinterMusings · 27/02/2023 23:07

Ok so stupid question if the day, but, how do you know actually do it? Know whose phone is whose??

manicthursday · 27/02/2023 23:07

Rename your phone something really boring or masculine and they are less likely to bother. Or sort out the settings as suggested already! So many people have "Sophie's iPhone" etc and that's going to be an obvious target for these weirdos.

They don't. All they can see is the name of the phone. Which you can set to anything same as your home wifi network name.

BadAmbassador · 27/02/2023 23:09

I rejected one in the queue for Pret the other day, which was a heroic effort as I was actually dying to see what it was 😂

BadAmbassador · 27/02/2023 23:11

Oh my question is, it is usually just random then? How does the person know whose phone they're sending it to?

Eatglass · 27/02/2023 23:27

@BadAmbassador it just goes to everyone in the vicinity who has airdrop turned on

mexicanabanana · 28/02/2023 06:10

I accidentally accepted an airdrop while on a plane. I was scrolling through pictures a few weeks later and saw a pilot hanging out of the same plane I had been on. It was obviously a joke picture, but I did think if I had seen that while on the plane and been a nervous passenger, I may not have found that very funny.

@manicthursday

Thanks for that. That sounds fraught with problems 😂

Good to know thanks!
I got one while travelling up the tube escalator once that said 'You're Gorgeous' 😖
I was dying to look around to see who they'd MEANT to send it to 😂
