To ask if you have a wage/income that would shock people?

Inspired by the tipping hairdresser thread, and a post on there about people having no idea what some people earn with an anecdote about a London cabbie earning twice what his nurse wife did.

I just wondered if anyone does a job where people would actually be shocked to know their true earnings based on stereotype- either way. For example cleaner earning loads or lawyer earning very little.

More or less than what people think?

I’m going to guess £80k.

Love this thread. My neighbour is a doctor and I was surprised she was on £33k for a four day week. I think she’s second year qualified? Works such long hours.

RampantIvy · 27/02/2023 22:18

According to most mumsnetters my salary wouldn't be worth getting out of bed for. They probably get paid in one month what I get paid per year. However, I love my job and get on really well with my workmates - note workmates, not colleagues.

This story is my story too - wow not many of us , the poor widow thing makes me feel uncomfortable tbh but I don't correct anyone

Neither do I. I keep my financial details to myself but there are lots of raised eyebrows that our standard of living has remained the same: I feel very lucky though, mainly for the children who haven’t had to miss out on anything material just because their dad isn’t there anymore.

Cabin crew. Part-time. Twenty years at the same company. £30k.

Surprised at that. Do you get cheap travel to the airport? That’s a tough job with weird hours.

Rainydayparade · 27/02/2023 22:19

My husband earns around £110k working 9 months a year as a self employed tradesman who’s specialised over the years.

We have the freedom to travel for the other 3 months of the year as a family while our son is too young for school.

I’ve witnessed plenty of people talk down to him (because of perceived wealth/job status) but he couldn’t care less and I couldn’t be prouder. If our son wants to do a trade at 16 we will definitely be encouraging it!

Dh and I earn about £180k but we give off the air of people who have no spare cash. If we try to buy anything like a car or a new TV we get ignored in show rooms. I've often been tempted to pull a 'pretty woman' scenario (don't need the man to help me though!) But never been brave enough.

We always get that too although our income has considerably dropped, even when we were high earners we were treated like lepers lol. Went to an estate show house and the salesman refused to give me details for a 4 bed (had all 3 kids with us).

We bought a house in the neighbouring estate!

blibblibs · 27/02/2023 22:21

Dental nurse on minimum wage, I really ought to look for something else.

Beseen22 · 27/02/2023 22:21

@McHelenz could be band 6/7 in acute role doing a lot of OOH? I'd imagine hospital at night ANPs must be pushing 50k? They are obviously very experienced though. Alternatively agency ...in theory I could earn 67k doing 3 nights each weekend for 48 weeks a year.

scoobycute · 27/02/2023 22:22

@bellylaughsalldaylong yea they range from band 5 right to band 8e...and all different specialities.

Anything £50k upwards is managerial (and well into a Band 8a and above!) in the NHS..which is why I'm curious and impressed at @Orangeis as she's stated she's a nurse...but I'm presuming more to the role than a nurse.

Can I ask what it is you do exactly? I’m also working in market research and can only dream of this sort of salary. No need to share if you don’t want to I’m just interested!

I think we will be going down the trade route for my son. It would be helpful if he did plumbing at the moment lol!

a person who is free to explore different avenues, can travel have family time and is happy is far richer in my opinion

Experienced teacher at the top of the pay scale with no responsibilities 4 days per week = 34k.

I work about 35 hours.

MaddyMaeM · 27/02/2023 22:23

I’m a peri instrumental teacher. Peri’s are always complaining about working for peanuts. I left my local music service after being treated like shit, now work for myself within schools and parents pay me directly. Teach mainly small groups and earn £1k a week for school hours only. I earn a lot more, parents pay a lot less - no brainer really!

Zhougzhoug · 27/02/2023 22:23

Wrote a non fiction book with a major publisher, got loads of press, magazine reviews, 5 stars on Amazon, etc, sold out first print run in a month. Got £1800 as the advance. Subsequent earnings about £3000 over two years.

RampantIvy · 27/02/2023 22:23

We have never even come close to earning 6 figures, but we are mortgage free and our solar panels cover most of our energy bills, so we aren't cash poor.

Pharmaceutical market research. Pays well and great benefits. Highly recommend.

QueenMabs · 27/02/2023 22:24

I worked out my nail tech who does around 8 sets of nails 5 days a week five or take at £25 a set is making 52k per year.

Cash in hand work also means many don't accrue their NI stamps/pension if they don't sort out their finances early enough.

"Sort out their finances" is clearly being used as code for "actually pay the tax they owe" here 😂

Myusername4321 · 27/02/2023 22:25

Husband is a welder and can earn between 90 - 120k a year, depending on where he works.

Daytripp · 27/02/2023 22:25

@3WildOnes @Cosmos123

Much less people hear Big4 and assume £100k plus, I’m on half that.

That's turnover though. She will have overheads, materials and expenses.

addictedtotheflats · 27/02/2023 22:26

@McHelenz
Not necessarily 8a. I am also a band 7 on £40k pro rata (36 hours) and have earnt just shy of 50K this year as I shift work and do unsocial hours.

I know agency nurses earning £6k+ a month. Crazy

Many years ago, husband and I were looking for a new family car, which in reality would really be my car, so it needed to suit me more than him.

We went into a Nissan showroom, and a young salesperson came up to us and spoke to my husband and completely ignored me. He invited my husband to accompany him to look at a couple of models of car.

I was furious and turned on my heel and walked out of the showroom. I caught the eye of another salesperson, who looked very embarrassed, and said "well that's a sale he's not making today".
