Neighbour's rooster

rosesinmygarden · 27/02/2023 20:35

The neighbour's 3 doors up have installed a rooster late last week.

We are in a built up area. It's doing its cockledoodledoo (what feels like) every 30 seconds from daybreak! I'm WFH and it's really loud and really distracting.

AIBU to think this is really selfish of them?

Roast chicken for dinner?

Yanbu, it’s rude to have a rooster in a built up area. It’s a noise nuisance

Iwantmyoldnameback · 27/02/2023 20:37

They need to put it in a smaller cage overnight if they don't stretch they don't crow.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/02/2023 20:37

Report them to anyone you can. What an arsehole. Having a rooster in a residential area is absolutely ridiculous.

rosesinmygarden · 27/02/2023 20:39

I don't wish the rooster any harm. He's very pretty.

But my goodness, the noise. It's relentless.

He's quiet overnight and we don't hear him until 6 am so I assume he's shut in until then thank goodness. But he crows constantly throughout the day.

I had a neighbour with cockerels many moons ago. They woke me up daily at ridiculous o'clock. I begged them to do something as it was breaking me.

These birds used to roam on the village green. Often straying into the road.

One day someone put lots of bird seed on the road. They didn't last long! Poor birds.

SirVixofVixHall · 27/02/2023 20:45

I have a cockerel but he isn’t very noisy. He does sound an alarm call if he sees a cat or a fox, or a bird of prey, but he is shut in a run at the moment anyway due to bird flu .
I expect your neighbour has a fairly large breed bird ? Cockerels can be pretty loud but I like the sound. I am surprised he is so noisy as he won’t be out and about, it might be because he is new, he will be shouting the alarm at everything he sees, but should calm down and get a bit quieter as he gets used to his new home.

I assume you mean that have bought/acquired a real life rooster in their garden, rather than installing something like an inanimate statue of one???

Check what your local council says about then. Some don't allow them within a certain boundary of a city/town. Check your local area and make a noise complaint.

Sally2791 · 27/02/2023 20:46

you could ask them to keep him indoors?

Tulipvase · 27/02/2023 20:47

I thought you weren’t allowed roosters in residential areas?

Poor cockerels! I wouldn't do anything like that.

I can't seem to find any laws/rules they are breaking. From previous experience, these neighbour's are twats of the highest order. Not people you can reason with.

That sounds encouraging.

I'm not exaggerating. He crows non stop for hours and hours. Less than a minute between crows.

What’s it going to be like in summer?
I think you would have to go down the noise pollution route. On the plus side you’ll have a lot of support from the entire neighbourhood.

Yes, he's live.

If they are kept somewhere dark they won't start crowing until they see daylight/get let outside. Ask your neighbour to keep the cockerel in a dark coop/shed overnight, or block out any light wherever it currently sleeps, and only let it out at a reasonable time, say 8am.

We had one when I was a teenager, that method worked well especially for waking lazy teens before noon!

I've already mentioned it doesn't start until 6 am.

It crows non stop for hours. They can't keep it in a shed all day!

They go out to work all day. It feels like they've done it deliberately to make life difficult for those of us trying to WFH/enjoy a moments peace during the day.

My neighbour got one a few years ago - we reported him to the council as it was crowing from 3am each morning. The council installed recording equipment and I had to keep a log of how often I was woken. It took a little time but the upshot was the council instructed him to get rid. Not sure what he did with it!

Wow, 3am! At least ours doesn't start until 6!

I'll give it a couple of weeks and hope he settles down and stops shouting at everything that moves!

The days are only getting longer, mornings earlier.

CherryHouse · 27/02/2023 21:26

Poor you!!! Years ago my friend had a neighbour cockerel!! It was broken. Instead of waiting for dawn, it started from 3am. We only stayed with her a week and it nearly broke me 🙉

user1473878824 · 27/02/2023 21:28

I didn’t think you were allowed cockerels in residential areas.

@Iwantmyoldnameback why should the bird suffer??

Confrontayshunme · 27/02/2023 21:31

A friend of ours has a little strait jacket thing that keeps them from stretching their necks to crow. A sort of cock muzzle if you will. 😂

Maybe drop one round?

BankOfDave · 27/02/2023 21:32

You’re way calmer about this than I would be. That is not going to be fun in the middle of summer. Pretty anti-social in a residential area!

Yellowdays · 27/02/2023 21:34

Well if he's out of his run overnight he will become fox dinner soon enough.
