To ask about vaping

DH stopped smoking over twenty years ago, but about a month ago started vaping. He says he really enjoys it and it’s helping him lose weight. He says his weight loss is more important and to be fair he’s lost about a stone since vaping. Is this a thing? Not sure how to react. He says he’ll stop when he’s ready. Does anyone else do this?

It's very hard to stop vaping, and I don't think the weight loss is associated with it. Generally when you stop smoking, the. weight piles on.

Nicotine suppresses the appetite so yes if he’s using a vape with nicotine and not 0% liquid it will help him to eat less.

I vape, and plan to give up this year but I think it’s going to be as difficult as kicking the fags was.

Mabelface · 26/02/2023 11:51

Nicotine is dulling his appetite. He's just regained his addiction unless he's on 0% nicotine.

DamnThatHitsHome · 26/02/2023 11:52

Vaping is much safer than smoking, but much less safe than not vaping.

I mean this nicely but people who start vaping, rather than using it as a tool to stop smoking, are idiots.

DamnThatHitsHome · 26/02/2023 11:53

I do want to emphasise though that if it’s a case of smoking vs vaping, vaping is much much better.

Just don’t start it unless you’re using it to reduce smoking addiction and eventually quit entirely- should be possible within a few months for most people.

I know someone who has never smoked started vaping recently. She says it helps her regulate her stress. I believe it's a 'thing'. Schools are reporting vaping of the scale.

stressedoutstudent · 26/02/2023 12:02

I vape. I quit smoking using vape in 2013, gradually reduced to 0% nicotine, and quit that in 2015. I then started vaping again in 2020 when i started uni and had a lot of personal events happen and found myself craving cigarettes and vaping was the better option. Vaping can also aid weight loss as you get that sweet taste "hit" from something other than food.

Also, before anyone pipes up about popcorn lung, this is from cancer research uk.

"E-cigarettes don’t cause the lung condition known as popcorn lung.
There have been no confirmed cases of popcorn lung reported in people who use e-cigarettes"

www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/does-vaping-cause-popcorn-lung

Obviously, putting nothing in your lungs is safest, but vaping is safer than smoking.

I used to smoke. Started vaping in an effort to quit and yes, definitely lost my appetite. Haven't been weighing myself so can't tell you for sure if there was a loss but it sure feels like a smallish one, maybe half a stone or so.
Intending to drop down from the 2mg to 1mg soon. Then the zero.
DD2 who vapes also reported appetite loss and says her peers use it for this.
