How much should a 30 year old have in savings?

I'm quiet curious to read people's responses

How much do you think a 30 year old should have saved by now and how much do you think they should be saving per month?

And the award for the most stupid post goes to .........

I guess @Sky1992 has realised her stupidity as she hasn't returned to the thread

This thread comes up quite often, I don't know if it's the same personb who is obsessed with how much other people are or aren't saving . Surely most people must know it's a meaningless conparison

QueefQueen80s · 26/02/2023 14:12

I'm 37 and have never, ever had savings.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Yes, most people need a phone in 2023. It can be four years old and fully paid off, or can be all fancy and new and costing you £50 a month.

you can get a haircut every three months for £40 or you can be the person who gets a full colour etc etc very few weeks for £300.

In three months the first person has just saved hundreds of pounds more than the second person. In many cases it’s partly personal choice, and the people moaning they don’t have any savings could often easily trim hundreds a month from their expenditure.

That was the point I was trying to make. If I had no savings I wouldn't get my hair cut at all. Just tie it back or do.it yourself.
There surely can't be many people with no clothes at all?!

^ exactly. In order to save I didn't get a hair cut for four years and went without all sorts that some people see as essentials.

Callmyfluff · 26/02/2023 14:21

I’m 30 next week and have £80k in savings, one DC (one month old)

I save £1000-£1200 a month on average, although that will drop when I go back to work and she starts nursery!!

Circumstances make a difference!

A mortgage, car finance, children, child support, student loans, overdraft, a wedding, credit cards, bankruptcy, education etc all make a huge difference.

Ridiculous wording. Silly question, on a par with “how long is a piece of string”

At 30 I owned a lovely detached house, had children, a two car family and worlds away from were we were at 20. By 40 I was divorced, owned my own place, was a grandmother. By 50 I was married again, huge home and brand new car.
In between I’d been a renter, unemployed, and at one point homeless.

It’s not a one size fits all.

Yes. It's a trope as old as the sun that poor people are poor because they bought a fancy phone and too many haircuts

Honestly most people can work out that to save more they need to not spend £300 on a haircut. It's pointless patronising advise trotted out on every thread about money to make the poster feel superior.

And to be fair you did say save before haircuts phone and clothes 🤷🏼‍♀️

Poor people can't afford fancy phones or hair cuts, obviously. The point is that, for those who have a choice between putting money towards a rainy day fund of 3 months pay and having their hair cut or a brand new phone, it would be more sensible to save their money. That is all.
In fact it's much more cost effective to save in advance than take out loans. Having ready cash means you can buy second hand. It might mean you can avoid pre payment meters. It may seem obvious to you but there are an awful lot of people floored by an unexpected bill of a couple of hundred pounds, when they could have saved that fairly easily by forgoing a few luxuries. It's not going to take them from poor to rich, but could result in a less stressful and easier life.

OhHoneyHoney · 26/02/2023 14:31

We’re 33, I have 0 in savings but go on 3 luxury holidays a year. I’d rather have the holidays

My DP is also 33 and has about £40,000

I hate most questions with "should" in them. All of these stupid rules that people come up with. There is more than one route to take through life.
...And I say that as a saver.

Sky1992 · 26/02/2023 14:46

Wow so many people were quiet offended by the looks of it.

There are no right or wrong answers I was just trying to see how people have got on with their savings and for those that can afford to do so.

And if you find this a 'stupid' post then why even comment 🙄

As for those who are saying this post is vague and I haven't detailed much its because if I said I had savings people would have issue if I said I didn't people would have issues.
